Echoes of Presence – Shadow, Light, and the Shape of Silence

(Extension of a Story previously published November 2025) (På Svenska nedan)

There are moments when light doesn’t just shine – it whispers. It glides across a surface, pauses at an edge, shapes a quiet contour. In that moment something fleeting yet tangible appears – a presence that cannot be captured, only sensed.

Perhaps it is there that inspiration takes form – in what has not yet found words, but is already felt.

The Silhouette – the Shape of Memory

A silhouette is more than a form against the light. It is an imprint of time, an echo of something that once stood there. When the details fade and the colors fall silent, presence itself steps forward. The silhouette becomes like a memory – not exact, but true in its own way.

In the shifting patterns of nature, the same language repeats: trees in backlight, a figure passing by, a shadow that follows without speaking. The silhouette is both anonymous and intimate – a reminder that we all leave traces, even when we believe ourselves unseen.

Shadows and silhouettes can become storytellers in themselves.
They remind us that absence can define presence, that a gesture of light and darkness can carry rhythm, memory, and meaning — much like jazz itself, playing between the notes.

Echo – What Lingers

An echo is not a repetition; it is a delay. It carries the distance of time but also the warmth of its source. When an image or sound bounces back, it changes – yet its essence remains.

So too with our impressions. We experience something, and much later it returns – in a color, in a light, in a feeling we cannot quite place. Art can be that echo: a movement between the now and what has lingered.

Mystic Mountain at Carina Nebula, Photographed by Hubble Space Telescope, NASA

Within the tempestuous Carina Nebula, photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope, lies “Mystic Mountain” – a living sculpture of gas and dust, sculpted by light and time. Perhaps the nature of inspiration is like that: light traveling through darkness and still arriving.

NASA’s Art Program has invited artists to capture the moment when the human gaze meets the infinite — a gesture of curiosity and connection that mirrors the creative act itself. One of its latest commissions, To the Moon and Back, by artists Geraluz and WERC, transforms geometric patterns into reflections on exploration and belonging.

To the Moon and Back, by artists Geraluz and WERC for NASA

Light from space is not cold; it carries our questions, just as a painting can hold our longing for meaning.

Presence – The Space Between

Presence is not about filling every surface, but about daring to leave emptiness.
It is in the pause, in the breath between two movements, that true presence emerges. A painting can breathe, a photograph can hold silence, a room can contain stillness.

We often speak of seeing, but perhaps it is more about staying – letting the gaze rest until something begins to speak back.
That is the moment when the viewer becomes part of the image.

Silence is not emptiness but a vivid presence — an art of surrender, allowing the world, and ourselves, to unfold in stillness.
Presence, then, is not static. It is a dialogue between weight and lightness, order and chance.

The eye seeks symmetry, yet the heart longs for irregularity.
When the well-balanced tilts slightly, when silence gains a hint of motion – energy arises.

Metal-organic frameworks, like MOF-5 shown here, have metal components, organic ‘linkers’ and a cavity which can allow in gases. Credit: Tony Boehle

That same energy can be sensed in this year’s Nobel Prizes, where science turned toward poetry.
* Quantum tunneling – particles passing through barriers as if they weren’t there.
* Molecular frameworks with vast inner surfaces – where the hidden holds more than the visible.
* Words that refuse to give up before the dark.
All tell the same story: that the invisible, the nearly impossible, still carries the potential for change.

In the act of creation, that movement is familiar – a kind of inner tunneling, where thought slips through barriers, from silence into form.

Dark Matter by Ofra Amit for The Universe in Verse by Maria Popova

There is a physics to every feeling, a structure to every thought.
And perhaps art is the place where the precision of science meets the poetry of stillness.

Light as a Storyteller

Light is more than illumination – it is the voice of the story. It shapes, conceals, reveals. It lets shadow speak.

The Leap, From Novisali’s “Echoes of Silhouettes in Presence” Exhibition

Sometimes it carries stillness, sometimes drama, sometimes only a faint promise.
Light shows us what is visible, but also reminds us of what is not.
In its passage through the day there is rhythm, change, and hope.
And in its absence – space for dreaming.

When shadow falls and light withdraws, something remains in the room.
Not just the image, but a feeling – a soft echo of presence.
Perhaps that is where the essence of art lies: in the dialogue between the visible and the perceptible.

Threshold of Becoming

A photograph does something curious with time.

In Camera Lucida, photography is described as carrying the quiet truth of what has been. Every image becomes both presence and absence at once — a trace of someone or something standing at the threshold between now and memory. Yet perhaps photographs are not only archives of the past. Perhaps they are thresholds.

In mythology, journeys often begin at crossings: a gate, a bridge, a shoreline, a forest edge. The hero pauses at the boundary between the familiar and the unknown. In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, this moment is called crossing the threshold — the step where transformation begins. The work later inspired many modern narratives, including Star Wars, whose creator George Lucas openly acknowledged Campbell’s influence.

Photography may hold a similar movement.

A photograph preserves what was, yet it also invites what may become. The viewer enters the image carrying memories, hopes, questions, and unfinished journeys. Meaning arises in the meeting. Perhaps this is why photographs move us so deeply. They do not only show moments. They hold transitions. The image becomes a threshold between memory and possibility, between the visible and the sensed, between who we were and who we are becoming.

The artwork “Vid Tröskeln / On the Threshold” continues this exploration. Beginning in a photographic view over Stockholm and unfolding through artistic layers, the work reflects on crossings — between city and horizon, presence and memory, stillness and becoming.

Beneath stone arches and ancient pillars, silhouettes gather — a family, or perhaps generations layered into one image. The water mirrors the sky; the city holds them in a soft embrace. They walk between columns of time, where every step is both arrival and departure. Here, presence feels architectural — a construction of belonging.

What transitions are shaping us right now — and what do we leave behind in silence?

Related Art Exhibitions by Novisali

These reflections continue in upcoming exhibitions where photography, light, shadow, stillness, and artistic layering hold conversations across thresholds — between memory and becoming, presence and absence, city and horizon.

Echoes of Silhouettes in Presence is a photographic and artistic exploration turning our gaze toward what often escapes the eye — the fragile contours of human presence.

Within the shifting dialogue between shadow and light, movement and stillness, silhouettes become more than outlines. They emerge as vessels of memory, traces of relationships, and carriers of dreams extending beyond the moment.

Through the interweaving of photography, digital layers, moving imagery, and artistic interpretation, the works invite reflection on what remains when an instant dissolves into silence. Each image becomes both fleeting and enduring — a pause in time continuing to resonate as a quiet echo.

The series grew from a shared autumn journey of exploring photography, composition, and creative dialogue together with fellow creators.

It was first presented in an intimate Private View on November 11, 2025, featuring five works. The exhibition on reflections on presence, memory, shadow, and becoming later expanded into a public virtual solo exhibition including 11 photographic and mixed-media works, 1 moving video artwork.

Se “The History of Jazz, Animated in Shadow Art” (3,5 min) av Dominik Käser och team på YouTube.

The Leap, från Novisalis utställning “Echoes of Silhouettes in Presence”

I The Hero with a Thousand Faces kallas detta ögonblick att korsa tröskeln — steget där förvandlingen börjar.

Mening uppstår i mötet.

Konstverket ”Vid Tröskeln / On the Threshold” fortsätter denna utforskning.

Echoes of Presence – Shadow, Light, and the Shape of Silence

(På Svenska nedan)

From Novisali’s upcoming “Sparks of Hope” Art Exhibition in December

When shadow falls and light withdraws, something remains in the room.
Not just the image, but a feeling – a soft echo of presence.
Perhaps that is where the essence of art lies: in the dialogue between the visible and the perceptible.

Se “The History of Jazz, Animated in Shadow Art” (3,5 min) av Dominik Käser och team på YouTube.

Radical Hope, Living Light, & the Spirit of Stone

There is a kind of hope that refuses to be ornamental. It is not soft or idle. It dares. It builds. It pulses in the cracks of stone, in the spirals of a snail shell, in the branches of a tree turned into stone.

This is the spirit of Hopepunk—a courage that grows where we least expect it, a gentleness that resists despair. It is not escapism but engagement. Not fantasy, but fierce imagination. And where better to let this spirit emerge than in Barcelona, a city where stone itself seems to dream, thanks to its artistic father Antoni Gaudi?

This is a city that teaches us how nature becomes form, and form becomes meaning. Here, even the architecture seems to breathe. Gaudí’s legacy has left more than buildings; it has left messages in color and curve, in shadows and sunlight. To bring Hopepunk to this place is not just to hang art on walls—it is to participate in a conversation that has been echoing for over a century.
Barcelona, with its tangled alleys and wide boulevards, its wild parrots and tiled mosaics, is a city that does not hide its heart. It offers it—layered and luminous—to those who dare to look. Just like Hopepunk. Just like Gaudí.

What Is Hopepunk?

Hopepunk is more than an aesthetic. It is more than a storytelling movement. It is a call to action.

Coined by Alexandra Rowland in 2017 as a counterpoint to the dystopian trend in science fiction, Hopepunk stories are about more than survival. They are about thriving against the odds. About hope. Characters fight for connection, justice, and change—even when success isn’t guaranteed. They insist on purpose, and show us that gentleness can be powerful, and that kindness is a form of resistance.

But Hopepunk isn’t just about art or fiction. It’s a lens through which we can reimagine our world—from the way we govern and lead to the ways we build community. It asks us to reshape the future—not with fear, but with imagination, resilience, and solidarity.

Hope isn’t passive. It’s something we cultivate, defend, and fight for.

A Temple of Becoming: Gaudí and Nature as Guide

No city embodies the Hopepunk spirit like Barcelona, and no artist shaped that spirit more than Antoni Gaudí. His masterpiece, the Sagrada Família, is not simply a church. It is a breathing forest of faith—a place where stone bends like trees and where sunlight becomes prayer.

Gaudí believed the sacred could be found not outside of nature, but within it. His columns weren’t just made to look like trees—they are trees, translated into stone. His vaults echo the spiral of seashells. His staircases rise like vines. His facades mirror mountain ridges, coral beds, and honeycomb. Above all, his work is infused with reverence for the divine within the living world.

“The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read, is that of Nature.” — Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí built slowly and deliberately, not chasing perfection, but honoring process. The Sagrada Família still remains unfinished—a visible metaphor for spiritual and creative growth. There are no harsh angles. No rigid lines. Only the flowing logic of rivers, roots, clouds, and galaxies.

Inside, light is not merely functional—it is sacred. Blues and greens fill the east side in the morning like water and renewal. Reds and oranges bathe the west at sunset, speaking of fire and transformation. The basilica becomes a living sundial, a prayer made visible across the hours.

To walk into the Sagrada Família is not to enter a structure, but to be received by one. It reminds us: creation is ongoing. Beauty is in process. Divinity lives in the in-between.

And this reverence for nature was not confined to one building. In Parc Güell, Gaudí designed undulating terraces, serpentine benches, and mosaic-covered creatures that echo natural topographies. In Casa Batlló, balconies resemble flower petals and bone, and the facade dances like water. At Casa Milà (La Pedrera), waves of stone sweep skyward, crowned by chimneys shaped like abstracted warriors or windswept stones.

Each of these places teaches us to read nature’s alphabet—to sense its rhythms in curve and color. Gaudí translated the soul of the Earth into architecture, and in doing so, gave us temples of movement and light.

In many ways, Gaudí was a Hopepunk visionary before the word existed. He showed us how art and architecture could be rooted in compassion, shaped by ecology, and open to mystery.

A Future Worth Fighting For

We are living through a time shaped by transition—technological, ecological, and existential. Climate shifts, social unrest, and rapid innovation collide, leaving many of us disoriented. And yet, amidst the chaos, a quiet and determined movement grows.

Hopepunk is part of that movement. It reminds us that even in the face of complexity, we can choose a different kind of future. One crafted not just through code and policy, but through creativity and care.

Science gives us tools. Art gives us meaning. Compassion gives us purpose. And together, they offer a blueprint for the future worth fighting for.

This sharing is not a conclusion. It is a beginning. A whispered question:

What would a Hopepunk hero do?

Perhaps they would slow down in a tunnel.
Perhaps they would hold their phone to a wall—and see.
Perhaps they would believe that art can be a doorway.
And maybe, just maybe, they would walk through.

The Tunnel as Portal: Where Hope Comes Alive

There is something poetic about exhibiting these pieces in a metro tunnel. It’s not a destination. It’s not a beginning or an end. It’s a place in-between—where people pass, pause, and carry their stories.

The tunnel becomes a metaphor for our times: a liminal space of movement, transition, and potential. Where even beneath layers of concrete and city noise, light can still enter. In this moment of global flux, we are all, in some way, walking between stations—between what was and what could be. And Hopepunk meets us there.

Two Hopepunk works now breathe with the city’s pulse. Hopepunk XVI and Hopepunk XVII are not just images to observe—they are experiences to enter. As the artist behind Novisali, I’ve brought the Hopepunk vision from speculative fiction litterature into public art space—art that doesn’t merely depict hope, but embodies it. Art that invites participation.

Positioned on Billboard 28 in the Barcelona Art Tunnel at Passeig de Gràcia metro station, the pieces mark a moment of beauty and possibility amid transit and transformation. Here, in this underground corridor between L3 and L4, light, movement, and meaning converge in a living invitation to pause.

Through Augmented Reality, each piece becomes a living story. By visiting Novisali.com, scanning the QR code, and pointing your phone to the artwork, layers emerge. Color pulses. Movement begins. The artwork comes alive—and with it, your imagination.

The tunnel becomes more than a corridor. It becomes a threshold. A reminder that even in the most ordinary places, the extraordinary can unfold.
Because hope is not something we inherit. It’s something we create.

Visit the Art Exhibition in Barcelona

To everyone who attended the opening on March 1 of the art exhibition Potential of the In-Between—thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was truly an honor to have you there, and I am deeply grateful that you took the time to step away from your busy lives to share this moment together.

This exhibition explores the spaces in between—the often unseen gaps where new possibilities emerge. Between what we know and what we have yet to discover. Between the artwork and the viewer. Between the past and the future. Witnessing your reactions to these themes has been deeply inspiring.

A special thank you to those who engaged in thoughtful reflection, shared your insights, and expressed how the art resonated with you—the emotions it evoked, the memories it stirred, the perspectives it revealed. Your engagement is a powerful reminder that art is a living conversation, shaped by those who experience it.

To those who selected a piece to bring into your home—thank you. Your support not only gives these artworks a new life but also extends to the Skokloster Art Association, ensuring that creativity continues to thrive. I hope these pieces spark new dialogues and meanings in their new settings.

Thank you for filling this space with presence, conversation, and possibility.

Nestled along the Swedish west coast, Tylösand is a haven of golden sands and clear waters, a place where history whispers through the waves. Originally called Tylesand, this enchanting locale was a gift from Denmark to Halmstad in gratitude for their efforts against the Swedes in 1563.

In its early days, Tylösand was a rugged and remote land, with a hidden cove known as Tjuvahålan, a sanctuary for pirates and smugglers. By 1870, a customs station and lighthouse were erected, adding a touch of mystery and adventure to the landscape.

As the 20th century dawned, the allure of the sea began to draw people to Tylösand. The early 1900s saw the rise of sea bathing, and by 1913, plans were underway to transform Tylösand into a seaside resort. By 1915, a charming inn welcomed guests, offering a cozy retreat amidst breathtaking scenery. The new Tylöhus hotel opened in 1931, solidifying Tylösand’s reputation as a premier destination for relaxation and joy.

The 1920s brought tent camping and simple beach cabins, creating a vibrant community spirit evolving into Tyludden. A city plan in 1929 sparked a construction boom, turning Tylösand into a lively, creative hub. Golf enthusiasts flocked to the 18-hole course completed in 1938, and St. Olof’s Chapel, moved to Tylösand in 1950, became a beloved landmark, inspiring contemplation and creativity.

The lifeguard station, established in 1960, became renowned for its lifesaving school, embodying the spirit of safety and community. Today, Tylösand’s seven-kilometer sandy beach is a beacon of beauty, earning the Blue Flag award in 1995.

The enchanting beauty and rich history of Tylösand have inspired countless artists and dreamers. Novisali’s latest art exhibition, “Transient Tylösand,” brings to life the magic and serenity of this special place, capturing the transient and timeless essence of this coastal paradise and inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its storied past and vibrant present.

More ways to enjoy Tylösand

Poem “Transient Tylösand”

Read the Poem “Transient Tylösand” below for a deeper poetic understanding of the themes explored;

Walk Bertil’s path and see the vistas grand,
Where nature’s artistry unfolds with grace,
From Tylön’s lighthouse, weathered, proud to stand,
To Tylösand’s warm, inviting, bright embrace.

In Tylösand, where sands stretch far and wide,
The beach invites with open arms, so grand,
With dunes embracing, standing tall with pride,
Where lifeguards watch, a safeguard on the land.

To north, the tranquil Niire-becken flows,
A calmer spot where peace and nature meet,
Where sand dunes rise, and gentle breezes blow,
A perfect place to find your own retreat.

To south, the hidden gems of Tjuvahålan lie,
With rocky cliffs and little beach so sweet,
Where families gather ‘neath the azure sky,
And snorkel trails reveal the ocean’s beat.

Tylösand, a name both near and far renowned,
For Sweden’s best-loved beach it surely is,
Where sunny days on golden sands abound,
A blend of leisure, waves, and ocean’s kiss.

A place where past and present blend as one,
Where each who visits leaves with heart aglow,
In Tylösand, beneath the summer sun,
Memories are made and cherished so.

Oh, Tylösand, where the ocean meets the sky,
Where the sun and sand unite, and waves dance by,
From Tjuvahålan to the lighthouse tall,
Tylösand, we hear your call.
