A Nordic reflection on trust, guardianship, and the invisible forces that sustain us.
Inspired by an earlier post, “The Trusted Tomten – a background check”

“The midwinter cold is hard,
the stars glitter and gleam.
All are asleep on the lonely farm,
deep in the midnight hour.
The moon follows its silent path,
snow gleams white on pine and fir,
snow gleams white on the roofs.
Only the Tomten is awake.”
— Viktor Rydberg

As human beings, we need stories to understand the world. Not to provide all the answers — but to help us live with the questions.

We need images, rhythms, and figures that help us find our way when darkness is dense and the future has not yet taken shape. And we need to believe in something. Not necessarily in the grand or spectacular — but in what endures. What watches. What continues its work even when everyone else is asleep.

We also need trusted leaders. Not those who are most visible, but those who carry the greatest responsibility.

The Tomten is just such a figure.

Pause for a moment:
Which stories help you orient yourself when the future is still unclear?
Who — or what — watches over your life?

The Invisible One Who Does Not Need to Be Seen

The roots of Santa Claus are often described through a Western narrative. History Today traces him to a blend of Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas, explaining how migration shaped his identity — and how, around 1820, he acquired his reindeer. It is an interesting story. But it is incomplete.

It overlooks the Scandinavian Tomten. Which is understandable. He cannot be seen.

In a time when visibility is often mistaken for significance, the Tomten reminds us of something else: that the most important work often happens quietly.

Before Santa, the Tomten

In the Nordic countries, Tomtar and Nisses have existed since Viking and Old Norse times. They belong to the farm, the soil, the animals, and the household. They appear around midwinter — when nights are longest and human dependence on nature is most profound.

The Tomten was never primarily a fairy tale. He was real — as belief, presence, and practice.

So real that both church and secular authorities attempted, already in the 14th century, to ban belief in him. Contemporary sources speak of tomte gods — an echo of an older worldview in which the Tomten stood at the threshold between humanity, nature, and something greater.

The Nordic Tomten is not grand.
He works in the small and the near — quietly, practically, close to the earth.
Where he is treated with care, he responds with steadfast loyalty.

Take with you:
Trust and responsibility have deep roots — older than our modern institutions.

The Serving Guardian

The Tomten protects the house, the family, and the animals. He helps with daily tasks, keeps watch while others sleep, and ensures that what has been entrusted to him continues to function.

But he can also be quick-tempered. Ignored, mocked, or forgotten, he can become dangerous. This makes the Tomten surprisingly modern.

He is a servant leader — one who gives by nature, yet also needs to be seen, acknowledged, and respected. Not for power, but for responsibility.

Reflection:
When have you carried responsibility in silence?
And when has someone done so for you?

Here the Tomten meets a far older theme: animals as guardians.

Animals as Guardians Between Worlds

In Nordic folklore — as in many cultures — animals are not subordinate to humans. They are companions and guardians. They carry memory, warnings, and wisdom between worlds.

This theme was central to my exhibition earlier this year:
Eyes Woven with Time – Guardians of the Invisible Thread, where animal gazes held both what has been and what has not yet been spoken.

When Viktor Rydberg’s Tomten makes his nightly rounds, this is exactly what he does. He tends to the animals first. The horses. The cows. The sheep. The hens. The dog — who recognizes his Tomten, because they are old friends. It is a mutual guardianship. They watch over one another.

The Tomten and Life’s Unanswered Questions

Rydberg’s poem makes the Tomten more than a farm guardian.
He becomes an existential figure — one who carries questions that cannot be resolved.

“Generation followed generation, bloomed, aged, departed — but where to?”

The Tomten reflects on time. On the passing of generations. On the direction of life itself. He has no answers. But he remains with the question.

Perhaps that is what makes him a guardian: not that he knows — but that he watches.

The Tomten and the Fox — An Ethics of Care

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) was one of Sweden’s most beloved authors, known for stories that combined deep moral clarity with compassion, courage, and respect for the vulnerable. While she is internationally known for characters such as Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, and Karlsson-on-the-Roof, her interpretation of the Tomten reveals another side of her authorship — quiet, ethical, and deeply humane.

In The Tomten and the Fox, she gives the Tomten a new voice. Here, the Tomten becomes a moral compass.

The fox, Mickel, is hungry. It is Christmas Eve. And winter is long.

The Tomten stops the fox from taking a hen — not through punishment, but through understanding.

When a child leaves out a bowl of porridge, the Tomten shares it with Mickel, and promises to share again each night if the fox needs it.

In the Tomten’s world, care is not about rules — but about relationship.

This is his ethics: not law, but care. not power, but responsibility. not control, but sharing.

The Porridge on the Step

When I was a child, we always placed a bowl of porridge with an extra knob of butter outside on Christmas Eve. It was our way of saying thank you — for the year that had passed, for protection, for what had held.

And in the morning, the bowl was always empty. So the Tomten must have been there. Right?

What the Tomten Still Teaches Us

The Tomten still has something to teach us. Keeping watch does not have to be heavy. It can be a quiet choice. A way of being present — for one another, for what has been entrusted to us, for life unfolding even in silence.

From the Tomten we can learn to:
– watch without demanding attention
– take responsibility for what is close
– remain with the question, even when answers are absent
– understand care as action, not principle

The Tomten reminds us that guardians are not always visible. They are not loud. They ask for no recognition. Yet they hold the world together through care.

So when the midwinter night feels long, we can remember that someone is watching. And that, in small moments, we too can become guardians — for one another, for nature, for what is fragile and precious.

And perhaps that is where hope resides: in knowing that we are not alone in the darkness, and that there is always someone awake — sometimes, even ourselves.

From Guardianship to Hope — Shared Sparks in the Present

These reflections on the Tomten — on quiet guardianship, care without spectacle, and staying present with unanswered questions — also extend beyond the written word.

They are echoed in the ongoing group exhibition Sparks of Hope, where I exhibit together with other artists. The exhibition brings together different voices and expressions, yet is united by a shared exploration of hope — not as certainty or promise, but as something fragile, relational, and quietly sustained.

Here, hope appears in small gestures rather than grand declarations. In materials, marks, and images that invite slowing down, noticing, and staying with what is unfinished. Much like the Tomten, the works do not seek attention — they keep watch.

On December 29, the exhibition closes with a finissage. Not as a conclusion, but as a moment of gathering — a space for conversation with fellow artists and visitors about the year that is ending, the questions we carry forward, and the forms of care and guardianship we may choose to practice in the year ahead.

In the calm after the holidays, the finissage becomes a shared pause — a small, collective spark — reminding us that hope often lives not in answers, but in presence.

Threads of Culture and Humanness

This reflection on the Tomten grows out of earlier explorations of culture and tradition. Across these writings, the Tomten emerges as a shared cultural figure — one that helps generations speak about responsibility, care, and belonging.

In The Trusted Santa – A Background Check the Tomten is approached as a figure of trust and quiet continuity.

The Culture of the Scandinavian Tomte Helps Reflection and Planning for the Year Ahead explores how tradition supports reflection at the turning of the year.

And in Holiday Lessons for Boards – Sustainability, Purpose & Leadership
these cultural insights are read as expressions of deeply human needs for stewardship, care, and long-term responsibility.

Together, these threads suggest why traditions like the Tomten endure: they speak quietly but clearly to what it means to be human.

I The Culture of the Scandinavian Tomte Helps Reflection and Planning for the Year Ahead utforskas hur traditioner kan hjälpa oss att stanna upp, reflektera och orientera oss när ett år går över i ett nytt.

Och i Holiday Lessons for Boards – Sustainability, Purpose & Leadership

(In English below)

— Novisali (alias Liselotte Engstam)

When Art Becomes a Gift of Presence

As the year turns toward its quieter days, we often find ourselves searching for gifts that offer more than decoration or novelty. Gifts that carry meaning. Gifts that can be lived with, returned to, and gently unfold over time. A gift of presence is not something that demands attention—it is something that stays.

Novisali Silk Prints were created in this spirit.

Silk prints— to be worn as flowing scarves, hung on the wall as gentle, space-holding artworks, or softly draped as a veil of beauty and presence.

Born from original watercolor artworks and reimagined through light and pixels, each piece is printed on natural silk, where pigment meets weave. The works bridge mediums, centuries, and states of becoming—honoring tradition while embracing transformation.

“Tradition whispers to innovation, and art becomes a journey.
History and reflection meet the digital age, inviting us to see beyond the ordinary.”
— Novisali (alias Liselotte Engstam)

Each artwork is printed on fine natural silk—Silk Satin (85 gsm), Silk Twill (54 gsm), or Silk Georgette (50 gsm)—in a generous 90 × 90 cm format. The silk carries the image differently each time, absorbing light, movement, and presence, allowing the artwork to shift subtly with its surroundings and with the person who carries it.

Novisali’s work exists at the intersection of traditional watercolor, digital transformation, and immersive expression. Through evocative artworks and installations, she captures the vitality of multiple perspectives, creating imagery that resonates not only visually, but emotionally and reflectively.

Rooted in social and environmental consciousness, the work explores transitions—between past and future, human and nature, inner growth and collective change. These are not fixed images, but living surfaces—responsive, relational, and open.

(The Story in English below)

Ledarskapsforskningen pekar i samma riktning.
INSEAD visar att de mest framtidsredo ledarna:

• vilar i mening,
• praktiserar mental flexibilitet,

i gester,
i möten,

In every age where darkness deepens, humanity’s longing for light grows with it. It is an ancient motion within us — as biological as it is existential — this impulse to seek direction when the world feels heavy.

The philosopher Gabriel Marcel called hope a fidelity to life, a deep form of presence that refuses to surrender to despair. For him, hope was not a fleeting wish but a quiet and steadfast force binding us to the world, to one another, and to our future selves. To hope, in Marcel’s sense, is not to turn away from the dark, but to look at it fully and still believe something more is possible.

Daniel Dennett and other evolutionary thinkers offer another view: hope as a biological strategy shaped over millennia. Without the ability to imagine a future different from the present, humans would have lost the will to act. Hope has helped us adapt, rebuild, innovate, collaborate, and rise again. It is an inner mechanism that urges us to build shelter, seek connection, and lift our eyes beyond the horizon.

Long before Marcel or Dennett, Aristotle described hope as a waking dream — an active orientation toward what could be, grounded in experience, judgment, and humanity’s striving toward fulfilment.

Hope, then, is the dream that keeps its eyes open — not fleeing reality, but shaping it.

If philosophers illuminate the inner motion of hope, Nobel laureates show us what hope looks like when lived in public life. Their actions reveal hope not as sentiment, but as courage in motion.

In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado for her struggle for democracy in Venezuela — “a flame of democracy in a deepening darkness.” Her life shows how hope sometimes requires resistance and ethical courage.

In 2021, Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov were honoured for defending press freedom against disinformation and authoritarian pressure. They remind us that hope can take the form of truth — the conviction that transparency still protects what is fragile.

In 2018, Olga Tokarczuk received the Literature Prize. Through her interconnected narratives, she shows hope rooted in wonder — the ability to see meaning and relation where others see chaos.

In 2014, Malala Yousafzai transformed personal vulnerability into global advocacy for girls’ education. She shows that hope is sometimes carried by the youngest among us, who believe in futures not yet born but worth fighting for.

Together, these laureates form a mosaic of hope’s expressions:
hope as courage,
hope as truth,
hope as story,
hope as right,
hope as a flame that refuses to go out.

They show that hope does not escape reality — it reshapes it.

Hope as a Human Capacity — How the Mind Finds Tomorrow

And yet hope is not only carried by global leaders. It is a capacity that lives quietly in all of us.

Decades of resilience research — from Emmy Werner’s landmark Kauai study to contemporary neuroscience — show that hope is not merely an emotion but an orientation toward possibility. Werner found that those who thrive despite adversity do so because something small but crucial is present: one caring relationship, one belief, one sense that life could open again.

Neuroscience confirms this. Hope lights up regions of the brain linked to planning, creativity, and motivation. It is a biological and existential movement — the capacity to envision an “alternative later” and begin organizing ourselves toward it.

As if the brain lights a lantern in the dark and whispers:
Follow me. There is a way.

Leadership research echoes this.
INSEAD finds that the most future-fit leaders:

• stay anchored in meaning,
• practice cognitive flexibility,
• embrace paradox (fear and hope, loss and possibility),
• invest in trusted relationships,
• prioritize renewal over pure endurance.

And the INSEAD 2025 Talent Competitiveness Report shows that resilience today demands more than adaptation — it requires imagination. The individuals, companies, and nations that thrive invest in curiosity, creativity, and human development.

Here, Joanna Macy offers a final insight: Active Hope is not something we have — it is something we practice.
A conscious preparation for futures that are not yet here, but whose outlines we can already sense.

Hope becomes a stance.
A choice.
A quiet orientation toward possibility.
Sometimes so small it is almost invisible — yet powerful enough to change direction.

Sparks of Hope — Art Where the Smallest Light Is Enough

These threads — philosophy, resilience, leadership, courage — come together in my artistic exploration Sparks of Hope.

In the stillness of winter darkness, even the smallest spark can carry a promise.

Sparks of Hope unfolds as a quiet journey where the organic luminosity of watercolor meets digital layers and augmented reality — a form of waking dream in Aristotle’s sense, an image of what might be, not only what is.

Here, hope is intimate:
in gestures,
in encounters,
in subtle rays that travel farther than expected.

The works are printed on recycled aluminum, a sustainable material that holds and bends light in its own unexpected way. Some pieces carry AR extensions — quiet portals that open both inward and outward.

Art that invites rather than impresses.
Art that asks:
What spark of hope is alive in you right now?

While Sparks of Hope glows in Mörby, other lights rise across Stockholm.

During Nobel Week Lights, the city becomes a living gallery. Installations inspired by Nobel Prize-winning breakthroughs illuminate December, reminding us:

Every transformative idea began as a spark.
Every breakthrough, poem, discovery, and peace effort began with someone who believed more was possible.

Light travels.
It spreads.
It is carried.
It is never alone.

Closing — When the Light Chooses to Stay

Hope moves through philosophy, through art, through leadership, through cities illuminated by Nobel visions.
But most of all, it moves through us —
in the gestures we offer,
the thoughts we nurture,
the possibilities we dare to imagine.

A related Poem on Sparks of Hope

1. In winter’s hush when shadows grow, a single spark begins to glow,
a whispered light the dark holds for you, yet cannot dim, nor ever overthrow.

2. It lives where quiet hearts remain, in fragile moments born of pain,
a rising flame that finds its way again, through silent nights that would constrain.

3. Hope rises softly, brave yet small, a steady breath against the fall,
a waking dream that stands through every squall, refusing fear’s relentless call.

4. It moves between us, soul to soul, restoring fragments into whole,
a gentle fire stitching heart to goal, rekindling courage’s hidden role.

5. It’s carried by the stories told, by minds that refuse to turn cold,
a lantern’s truth that even storms enfold, still shining bright, unbroken, bold.

6. From Nobel lights across the night to whispered truths that spark insight,
a trailing glow that paints the darkness white, and guides the weary toward what’s right.

7. In every child who dares to see a future shaped by what could be,
a humming spark that sets the spirit free, and calls forth worlds we’ve yet to see.

8. In leaders who, though storms ensue, choose meaning over what they knew,
a steady light that breaks discipleship to rue, and shapes a path toward something new.

9. It shines in art where colors rise, in lines that echo open skies,
a gleam that shimmers where the quiet lies, unveiling truths the heart supplies.

10. And when the world feels still and bare, hope walks beside us unaware,
a spark that waits within the evening air, inviting us to breathe—and share.

Long before we could photograph a flower with a phone or model a forest from a satellite, we pressed its petals between pages.

We flattened beauty to remember it. And from that act — tender, deliberate — a quiet revolution in how we see the natural world began.

Ancient Roots: The Sacred Origins of Pressed Plants

Based on the Artworks in the exhibition Herbarium of Time by Novisali

Yet the story didn’t start in a European cabinet, or a Victorian parlor.
It began even deeper — in the warm breath of the desert, in the hands of the ancient ones.

In Egypt, over three thousand years ago, people dried flowers not just for beauty, but for eternity.

from Tutanchamons burial site

In the tomb of Tutankhamun, garlands of olive leaves, blue lotus, and cornflowers were found — perfectly preserved offerings to accompany the boy-king into the afterlife.

They believed that flowers held power: to honor, to heal, to guide the soul beyond.

The lotus, rising pure from muddy waters, became a symbol of rebirth.
Rose petals were laid beside the dead in acts of remembrance.

from the Ebers Papyrus

And scrolls like the Ebers Papyrus, one of humanity’s oldest medical texts, recorded the healing uses of over 700 plants.

They dried them, sorted them, used them with intention.
It was not called an herbarium — but it was a living archive, rooted in reverence.

Centuries passed.

The Garden of Stillness: Science, Discovery, and Classification

Painting of Luca Ghini (1490-1566)

In Renaissance Italy, Luca Ghini began pressing plants flat, fixing them onto paper not to embalm the soul, but to illuminate the species.
He called it a hortus siccus — a dry garden.

He taught students to press leaves and flowers, not merely to heal, but to study, to compare, to learn from nature as it truly was, not only as the ancients described it. Not to heal the body, as the Egyptians had done, but to heal ignorance — to classify, to understand, to name. And so, the world’s first botanical archive was born — not a garden of growth, but a garden of stillness.

From Ghini’s dry garden, a new chapter began — humanity started building a library of life.
From there, the pressed garden bloomed across continents.
Explorers gathered flora like trophies.
Colonists pressed petals alongside their claims of land.

Scholars stored petals from Persia, petals from Peru.
In Kew and Calcutta, in Uppsala and beyond, cabinets filled with green whispers from every edge of Earth.
Not bound by season or soil, a herbarium could hold a mountain meadow in winter, or a jungle flower long gone to seed. It could let a Swedish botanist compare with a Brazilian one, a 21st-century student with a 16th-century explorer. Pressed between sheets lay the shared language of leaf and root.

“If you do not know the names of things, the knowledge of them is lost too.”
— Carl Linnaeus

At the same time as Linnaeus ordered the language of plants in his system, a new way of seeing nature spread across Europe.

In Stockholm, brothers Bengt and Peter Jonas Bergius continued the work, letting their home along Karlbergsvägen blossom into a botanical garden. Their herbarium and garden were later donated to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and became the foundation of what is today the Bergius Botanic Garden. In the 19th century, the garden was moved to the shores of Brunnsviken, where the memory of their work followed. It remains there still, a living archive of nature’s stillness and transformation.

Exploration of the global movment of botanical specimens

Such herbaria, whether born in Italy, in Linnaeus’ system, or in the Bergius brothers’ garden, were more than specimens. They were time travelers.
Each page told a story.

A flower from a colonial voyage — hopeful, or haunting.
A weed found by a child in a forgotten field.
A tree leaf gathered just before the forest was cleared.
A violet pressed by Emily Dickinson, inked with silence and verse.
A tomato from 1540s Italy — now extinct — whose DNA still whispers recipes for the future.

And with time, the herbarium expanded. Across Europe, explorers brought home the flora of distant lands, dried under foreign suns. In drawing rooms and university halls, pressed plants became symbols of curiosity, conquest, love, loss.
And alongside the science, art blossomed.

Art and Spirit: Flowers as Language and Revelation

Example of Japanse Kacho-ga art

From early Persian manuscripts and Japanese Kacho-ga scrolls, to the intricate works of 18th-century artists like Maria Sibylla Merian and Mary Delany, botanical illustration became more than visual record—it became a devotional act.

To paint a flower in its precise, unfolding detail was to bear witness to the sacred geometry of life. Artists learned not only to see, but to revere. In Victorian parlors, the act of pressing, drawing, or arranging a plant was often imbued with spiritual meaning—connecting human fragility with nature’s cycles of decay and renewal.

In the Romantic era, plants became conduits for inner states: violets for humility, lilies for purity, mosses for memory.

Example of language of flowers

The language of flowers (floriography) encoded emotion and ritual, while esoteric thinkers in the Theosophical and Anthroposophical movements saw botanical forms as reflections of universal order, even cosmic consciousness.

Herbarium of Time V. from the Flower Chapter

Botanical art was never just about accuracy—it was a way of listening.

A practice of stillness.
A meditation in pigment.
A communion with the invisible.

Amateurs and aristocrats alike assembled albums. Girls at finishing schools pressed primroses and labeled them in Latin. Botanists argued over names and lineage. Artists arranged specimens like mandalas. Linnaeus rearranged the world with his unbound pages, letting classification become conversation.

“I have shown, that there is a connection between the plant world and the world of the soul.” — Hilma af Klint

A herbarium was a place of order amid wildness, of learning forged in the stillness of decay.

And as centuries passed, we kept pressing.
We pressed in hope, in science, in grief.

Green Echoes: Herbaria as Time Travelers

Across shelves and drawers in museums and universities around the world, over 390 million plant specimens rest in stillness — mosses and magnolias, algae and acorns, extinct orchids and seeds of tomorrow’s medicine. But these aren’t just scientific collections. They are living archives of memory, climate, and care.

Today, herbaria are being reopened with new eyes.
– Scientists read leaves for signs of rising carbon and early blooming.
– Soil stuck to roots tells stories of lost forests.
– Ancient DNA offers clues for breeding drought-resistant crops.

These pressed petals, once gathered in silence, are now speaking to the future.

In labs, they are scanned and sequenced.
In classrooms, children press flowers with glue and wonder.
In galleries, they hang like green elegies to lost ecologies.

Perhaps a future botanist will trace its veins.
A child will whisper: “So this is what it looked like.”
A scientist will find a missing cure.
An artist will ink poetry into the space between its petals.

Today, the spirit of the herbarium continues to evolve — not only in drawers and folders, but through data, code, and imagination.

The Herbarium of Time by Novisali is a poetic virtual art exhibition exploring the centuries-old practice of pressing plants — not just as a botanical art, but as an act of memory, care, and cultural preservation.

From ancient garlands to digital archives, these fragile specimens speak across time: healing, naming, mourning, and remembering. Each pressed petal becomes a green time traveler, holding echoes of climate, culture, and curiosity.

More than an archive, this is a mirror of now and a whisper to the future — inviting us to slow down, press, and preserve what truly matters.

(Finn den svenska bloggposten > HÄR)

Introduction: The Traces That Shape Us

There are moments when life slows.
When the wind hushes just enough for us to hear something deeper—
not a voice, but a knowing.

You look down and see a footprint. Maybe your own. Maybe someone else’s.
A trace. A reminder. A gesture.

This blog post is a reflection on footprints—not only the ones we leave, but the ones we find. On the courage it takes to walk. The beauty of what passes. The power of being fully here. And the invitation to reconnect—with the world, with others, with yourself.

As summer reaches the Swedish coast, we will return to Tylösand— not only as artists, but as humans walking a shore that has witnessed thousands of silent stories.

This is a path worth pausing for.

Footprints as Acts of Courage

There is a certain kind of silence in taking a step that no one sees.

Courage, in its rawest form, is not about heroics. It is about presence. It’s about being there—with your doubts, your scars, your not-yet-answered questions—and moving anyway. Every footprint is a testament to motion. To a moment when you stood at the edge of uncertainty and chose not to retreat.

There is courage in leaving. In staying. In saying yes. And even more, in saying no.

Sometimes it takes all our strength just to lift a foot from the place we’ve grown stuck in. The first step out of grief. The first attempt to speak. The decision to try again—differently. These are not the moments the world celebrates, but they are the ones that shape us.

Courage is the muscle behind all meaningful change. It is the threshold energy that transforms reflection into action. In coaching, we often see this bravery in the quiet spaces—in the pause before truth is spoken, in the shaky laughter after insight arrives shares Institue of Coaching (links furhter below).

The famous Austrian Poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), knew this courage. In his Letters to a Young Poet, he wrote:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart, and try to love the questions themselves.”

A footprint doesn’t need to be deep to be meaningful. It just needs to be yours. Laid down with presence. With willingness. With whatever strength you had in that moment.

Reflective prompt:

What is a small step you’ve already taken that was more courageous than you’ve allowed yourself to acknowledge?

What new beginning might be waiting quietly just beneath your feet?

Footprints as Reminders of Impermanence

The tide always comes.

We walk anyway.

Footprints in the sand carry an honest truth: nothing lasts. And in that fleetingness lies a quiet invitation—not to grasp more tightly, but to live more presently.

Impermanence is not a flaw in the design. It is the design.

From Zen teachings we are reminded that impermanence (mujo) is not a concept to understand, but a rhythm to embody. They teach that letting go is not detachment but participation in life’s ongoing renewal. “Emptiness is not nothingness—it is potential” as shared in the article Everything is connected from the Musubi Acadmey.

Ephemeral rituals like Tibetan sand mandalas—labors of intricate beauty swept away moments after completion, reminding us that value lies in presence, not permanence, as shared in the article The dust that measures all our time in the Public Doamin Review.

There is also wisdom in how nature itself erases and rewrites. Andy Goldsworthy’s ephemeral land art exists in communion with the elements, destined to vanish and yet fully alive in its vanishing.

There is also wisdom in how nature itself erases and rewrites. Andy Goldsworthy’s ephemeral land art exists in communion with the elements, destined to vanish and yet fully alive in its vanishing.

As Oliver Sacks wrote in his final essay:
“I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude.”

Impermanence humbles us. But it also liberates. If everything is in motion, then we are allowed to begin again.

Reflective prompt:

What might you hold more gently—if you embraced the truth that it will change?

What beauty can only exist because it doesn’t last?

Footprints as Markers of Presence in a Distracted Age

In today’s world, we move quickly—too quickly to notice where we’ve been, or where we are. Yet footprints only form when we touch the ground. They only appear when we slow down enough for our presence to leave a trace.

To leave a footprint is to say: I was here. I was awake. I paid attention.

That might sound simple, but in an age of algorithmic noise, being present is radical. It requires us to claim our own pace in a world that urges speed. It requires choosing awareness over autopilot.

Attention is a capability—a trainable way of interacting with the world, with implications for wellbeing, creativity, and collective intelligence, as explored by Institute for the Future (IFTF) .

The way we pay attention is the way we shape our lives.

The american author Annie Dillard, wrote:
“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives”, as reflected in the Marginalian.

A footprint is a record of embodied attention. It doesn’t ask for perfection. It just invites presence.

Reflective prompt:

What space in your life needs a footprint—not of busyness, but of presence?

How might you begin to practice noticing again?

Footprints as Calls to Reconnect

A footprint is never just yours. It’s always part of something larger.

It holds the echo of those who came before and makes space for those who follow. It touches not just sand, but memory, story, belonging.

In an age that often separates us—by screen, by pace, by fear—footprints remind us we are

People have always moved. Journeys across land and sea mark hope, displacement, resilience, and search for meaning. Every step carries more than just weight—it carries history, longing, and possibility, as shared by the global coverage by The Atlantic.

The symbolic maps Carte de Tendre, a 17th-century allegorical map of human connection—imaginative tools for understanding our emotional geography, as highighted in the Public Doamin Review.

In coaching, reconnection is often a return: to values, to purpose, to relationship. The Institute of Coaching points out that leaders and individuals need to remember they do not walk alone—and that to lead is to listen, to feel, to relate.

To walk with awareness is to reweave connection—to the shore, to community, to something sacred and shared.

Reflective prompt:

Who walks with you—even when they’re not beside you?

What would it mean to walk in deeper relationship—with the world, with others, with yourself?

Returning to the Shore: A Summer Invitation

Each summer, the shores of Tylösand invite us back—not just to walk, but to wonder.

In this year’s selective exhibition, Footprints in the Sand, we return to familiar artworks with unfamiliar eyes. The same works, yet not the same viewers. We are changed. You are changed. And the footprints we notice now may not be the ones we saw before.

Some footprints are barely visible.
Some we try to erase.
Others we didn’t know we were leaving at all.

This exhibition is a pause—a soft space to notice.
To trace what remains. To imagine what comes next.

You are warmly invited to join us both Virtually and in Tylösand—
to reflect deeply, sit quitely, walk slowly, and let the artworks meet you where you are.

Infinite Imprints: Celebrating Uniqueness Through the Art of Snowflakes

Snowflakes have long been a source of wonder, admired for their delicate beauty and fleeting nature. Yet their true magic lies in something much deeper: no two snowflakes are exactly alike. This remarkable fact, discovered through science and photography, has become a powerful symbol of individuality. Inspired by this, “Infinite Imprints: Celebrating Uniqueness Through the Art of Snowflakes” is an exhibition that invites us to reflect on the importance of being unique and how we can draw lessons from the natural world to nurture our own creativity.

The Discovery of Snowflake Uniqueness

For centuries, snowflakes were admired for their symmetrical shapes, but their true complexity remained a mystery. In the late 19th century, a Vermont farmer named Wilson Bentley changed this forever. Using a camera and a microscope, Bentley captured the first photographs of snowflakes, revealing an astonishing diversity of patterns.

Each snowflake, he discovered, was the result of countless tiny variables—temperature, humidity, and the path it took through the atmosphere—all combining to form a design that had never existed before and would never exist again. Bentley’s work brought this uniqueness to light and reminded the world of the infinite variety present in nature.

This revelation reshaped how we think about snowflakes and inspired countless metaphors about individuality and the value of embracing what makes each of us different.

Why Being Unique Matters

In a world that often celebrates trends and uniformity, the idea of uniqueness offers a refreshing perspective. Just as no two snowflakes are alike, no two lives follow the same path. Each individual carries their own combination of experiences, talents, and perspectives, which form their distinct “pattern.”

Uniqueness matters because it fosters:

Authenticity: Embracing individuality allows people to express themselves in ways that feel true to their core.

Innovation: Diversity of thought and experience leads to fresh ideas and groundbreaking solutions.

Empathy: Sharing and celebrating differences helps build connections and mutual understanding.

Resilience: Recognizing and valuing what makes us special can provide strength in challenging times.

By learning from the natural world, we can begin to see uniqueness not as a trait to minimize, but as one to amplify.

Lessons from Snowflakes on Developing Uniqueness

Snowflakes are formed under extraordinary circumstances, their shapes dictated by the specific journey each one takes. Similarly, our uniqueness is shaped by our experiences, environment, and choices. Here are some ways to cultivate and embrace individuality, inspired by the life of a snowflake:

Embrace Transformation:
Snowflakes begin as simple water droplets, transformed by the conditions around them. Life’s changes and challenges shape who we are—embrace these moments as opportunities for growth.

Celebrate Imperfections:
No snowflake is perfect, yet each one is beautiful. Our perceived flaws and imperfections often add depth and authenticity to our character. Instead of hiding them, celebrate them.

Be Open to Discovery:
Snowflakes take on intricate designs because of their exposure to diverse conditions. Similarly, exploring new ideas, cultures, and experiences can expand our creativity and help us develop our unique voice.

Stay True to Your Path:
Each snowflake’s journey through the clouds is entirely its own. Staying true to your own values, passions, and dreams ensures that your “pattern” is authentically yours.

Snowflakes as a Source of Inspiration

Infinite Imprint Song:

The natural elegance and individuality of snowflakes hold profound lessons for humanity:

Resilience in Fragility: Snowflakes may seem delicate, but together they transform landscapes, form avalanches, and alter ecosystems. This duality of fragility and strength mirrors the human experience.

Infinite Possibilities: The mathematical complexity of snowflakes shows that even within constraints (like six-sided symmetry), infinite variation is possible. This inspires us to explore the endless potential within ourselves.

Interconnected Beauty: While each snowflake is unique, they come together to form snowdrifts, storms, and blankets of snow. This reminds us that individuality doesn’t exist in isolation—it contributes to a greater whole.

The Exhibition Experience

A Celebration of the Unrepeatable

“Infinite Imprints” is more than an exhibition about snowflakes—it is a celebration of individuality and a call to embrace what makes each of us unrepeatable. By exploring the science and art of snowflakes, the exhibition encourages visitors to reflect on their own unique patterns and how they contribute to the world around them.

Like snowflakes, our time is fleeting, but our impact can be profound. By embracing our individuality and drawing inspiration from nature, we can leave imprints that are as beautiful and unrepeatable as the snowflakes that inspired this exhibition.

Poem

Infinite Imprint
A snowflake descends, a whispered design,
Unique in its journey, its moment divine.
Born from clouds in an icy embrace,
No two alike in the whole of space.
Each flake a story, a path of its own,
A fleeting testament, carved and flown.
What shapes its edges, its intricate frame?
Wind’s gentle nudge, or a storm’s fiery claim?

Like lives unfolding, through trials we steer,
Each twist and turn makes our essence clear.
Imperfections glisten, their beauty profound,
In flaws, our strength and our truth are found.
For what is perfection but a common refrain?
True art lies in difference, in joy, and in pain.
Together they fall, a collective storm,
Each flake unique, yet a shared form.

A blanket of white, a symphony played,
Where singular notes find harmony made.
So let us, like snowflakes, embrace our design,
Our paths unrepeatable, our moments divine.
For in the fleeting, the fragile, the rare,
Lies the beauty of being, beyond compare.
For like snowflakes, we shimmer, we drift, and we fade,
Leaving infinite imprints only we have made.

Beneath the clouds where whispers form,
Each flake begins in chaos’s storm.
A crystal seed in a frozen dance,
Shaped by the elements, not by chance.
Through winds and currents, its structure grows,
Each angle shifting, as only it knows.
Temperature’s touch, the air’s embrace,
Craft a pattern, unique in its grace.

Yet fleeting it falls, a brief delight,
A masterpiece born, then lost from sight.
Its journey, a moment, a transient phase,
A metaphor wrapped in winter’s haze.
And so we stand, in wonder and awe,
Nature’s reminder of life’s great law:
No two the same, in all of time,
Each flake a poem, each life a rhyme.

Like snow, we’re shaped by forces unseen,
By trials endured, and places we’ve been.
Our cracks and curves, our highs and lows,
Are what make the art of a life that glows.
In a world of billions, it’s easy to blend,
But uniqueness is where true beauty transcends.
Like snowflakes, our purpose is not to repeat,
But to craft a song only we can complete.

Together we fall, like snow to the earth,
Unified in our unique worth.
A blanket of stories, a mosaic of dreams,
Where singular voices weave greater themes.
So take from the snowflake a lesson profound,
In its fragile form, life’s truths are found.
Embrace your shape, your journey, your line,
For your imprint is yours, distinct, and divine.

As winter fades and snow melts away,
The memory lingers, the lessons stay.
Infinite imprints, each fleeting and rare,
A timeless reminder: we’re beyond compare.
Each snowflake falls, a silent decree,
Proclaiming the beauty of diversity.
In its symmetry lies a deeper refrain,
That even in order, uniqueness remains.

Each line, each branch, each crystalline thread,
A story of chaos and balance wed.
As sunlight glints on a snowy sprawl,
It whispers a truth to one and all:
That life’s great wonder is not in the same,
But in the spark of each flickering flame.
We, too, are shaped by forces unseen,
By struggles endured, by places we’ve been.

Our scars, our triumphs, the paths we’ve crossed,
Are marks of beauty, not things lost.
The flake that lingers, or the one that fades,
Both leave an imprint the storm has made.
A fleeting moment, yet deeply profound,
A dance of existence where meaning is found.
So let us celebrate what sets us apart,
The twists and turns that sculpt the heart.

For in the kaleidoscope of who we are,
Each soul shines like its own bright star.
Snowflakes teach that to stand alone,
Is to be part of the world’s grand tone.
A harmony played through differences met,
A song not finished, not written yet.
To live like the snowflake, unique and true,
Is to honor the gift of simply being you.

In fleeting form or lasting art,
Each moment lived is its own work of heart.
When winter recedes and the snow is gone,
The lesson of snowflakes lingers on.
That life’s most precious and wondrous part,
Is the beauty born of a unique heart.
So craft your path with courage and care,
Like a snowflake falling through frosted air.

For in the imprint you leave behind,
Is the mark of a life, uniquely designed.
Each snowflake whispers as it falls,
A story told in nature’s halls.
Its fragile form, its fleeting grace,
A silent echo of time and space.
Born from vapor, a tiny spark,
Shaped in silence, cold, and dark.

It carries the marks of the journey it’s known,
A tale of creation, entirely its own.
No two alike, the sages declare,
Each flake a marvel, a treasure rare.
Like fingerprints etched in the frosty sky,
Proof that no soul is meant to comply.
Its patterns, random, yet precise,
A testament to nature’s device.

A paradox wrapped in crystalline art,
Complex and chaotic, yet whole at its heart.
So too are we, like flakes in the air,
Each life a wonder, beyond compare.
Our struggles and joys, our fears and fire,
All threads in the fabric of what we inspire.
Through every trial, a shape takes form,
A self defined in the quiet storm.

Our edges sharp, our centers pure,
Made stronger by all we must endure.
Let snowflakes teach what words cannot,
That life’s true worth is never forgot.
It’s found in the flaws, the moments unplanned,
In every small gesture, every bold stand.
For even in melting, a snowflake remains,
A memory etched in fleeting chains.

Its impact lingers, its beauty shown,
A reminder that none of us are alone.
Together we fall, like snow in the night,
Creating a canvas, pure and white.
A tapestry woven of unique designs,
A masterpiece formed by countless lines.
So live as the snowflake, fleeting yet free,
A reflection of life’s great mystery.

A Journey Through Hope, Resilience, and The Space In Between

As the world dons its festive garb and we gather to celebrate, the season offers more than just joy and tradition. It offers a moment to reflect on the extraordinary stories we’ve lived, the light we’ve shared, and the possibilities waiting to be discovered. This year, three vivid exhibitions—the Space In Between, Hopepunk, and Voyage of Light—guide us toward deeper understanding and connection.

These aren’t just exhibitions—they’re invitations. Invitations to pause, to imagine, and to embrace what it means to truly live in the spirit of the season.

The Space In Between: Where Transformation Happens

The first step of our journey takes us into the Space In Between, a metaphorical gallery that explores the moments of transition—the pauses between actions, the silence between words, the stillness between breaths. It’s here, in the in-between, where transformation takes root. As we stand on the threshold of a new year, this space reminds us to honor both where we’ve been and where we’re headed.

The holidays themselves are a “space in between,” a liminal time that bridges past and future. It’s not a time of hurried resolutions or endless to-do lists but of reflection. What moments defined your year? What lessons whispered through your challenges? In the Space In Between, we find the courage to linger, to learn, and to prepare for the road ahead.

Hopepunk: The Power of Choosing Hope

The next stop in our holiday journey is Hopepunk, an unapologetically optimistic movement that celebrates the courage of hope. In a world often focused on the fractures and darkness, Hopepunk reminds us that hope is not naive—it’s revolutionary. It’s a declaration that no matter how challenging the path, we choose to build, dream, and believe.

This holiday season, let’s infuse our celebrations with the spirit of Hopepunk. Each kind word, each act of generosity, each dream we dare to share becomes part of a collective hope that transforms not just our lives but the world around us. It’s a reminder that every small light we kindle creates a constellation.

Voyage of Light: Illuminating the Darkness

Finally, we enter Voyage of Light, a celebration of humanity’s timeless quest for illumination. In the darkest days of the year, cultures across the world have always sought the comfort and guidance of light—candles, stars, hearths. But this exhibition challenges us to look beyond the physical glow and discover the light within ourselves.

This inner light is our resilience, our wisdom, and our compassion. It’s the courage to face the shadows and the determination to shine even in adversity. As we celebrate the holidays, let’s honor this light by sharing it with others—through laughter, love, and the simple act of being present.

A Holiday Reflection

As we leave these exhibitions and return to our own celebrations, we carry their lessons with us:

From the Space In Between, we learn the value of pause and transformation.

From Hopepunk, we embrace the radical act of hope.

From Voyage of Light, we are reminded to nurture and share our inner glow.

This holiday season, let us weave these ideas into the fabric of our lives. Let’s find beauty in the spaces between, joy in the act of hoping, and courage in the light we carry. Together, we can create a world that shines brighter—one intentional act, one kind word, one hopeful dream at a time.

From Novisali, may your holidays be filled with light, love, and the joy of endless possibilities.

Happy Holidays with Peace and Success in 2025!
