Mapping Hope – as a Practice, Not a Promise

Art, AI, and Human Agency in Times of Uncertainty

Hope is often misunderstood.

We tend to speak about hope as something that belongs to the future — something that will arrive when uncertainty disappears, when problems are solved, when clarity returns. Hope becomes a reward waiting at the end of difficulty. But the world we inhabit today does not easily allow for that kind of hope.

Across economic, technological, and societal domains, uncertainty has shifted from being an interruption to becoming a condition. Work emerging from the World Economic Forum increasingly describes volatility, complexity, and systemic interdependence as structural realities rather than temporary disruptions. The question is no longer how to predict the future accurately, but how to remain capable of acting meaningfully without certainty.

This is where hope changes meaning. Not as a promise. But as a practice.

Hope is not optimism — and not prediction

Optimism assumes that things will turn out well. Prediction assumes that we can foresee what lies ahead. Hope requires neither.

Leadership and organisational research, including discussions in INSEAD Knowledge, increasingly emphasises the importance of holding paradox — the ability to remain inside tension without rushing toward premature resolution. Creativity and innovation often emerge when ambiguity is engaged with rather than avoided.

Hope lives in this space. It does not say everything will be fine. It says something meaningful can still be done from here.

This distinction matters. Optimism disappears when conditions worsen. Hope, when practiced, remains available even in ambiguity.

AI, imagination, and human agency

Artificial intelligence intensifies this tension. AI improves prediction and optimisation, yet it also reveals how limited prediction remains in complex human systems. The future becomes increasingly shaped by interaction rather than forecast.

Research from the Institute for the Future and futurist Jane McGonigal reframes this challenge in an important way. Rather than attempting to predict a single future, people and organisations benefit from practicing multiple possible futures. Imagining different scenarios strengthens resilience, reduces anxiety, and increases agency because individuals feel better prepared to respond to change.

Hope, in this sense, is not passive expectation. It is an active capacity to imagine alternatives and remain engaged with shaping them. This aligns deeply with artistic practice. Art does not forecast the future; it expands the range of futures we can imagine ourselves inhabiting.

The neuroscience of uncertainty & creativity

Neuroscience helps explain why this matters. Uncertainty activates threat responses in the brain. We seek closure, explanation, and control. Yet creativity research shows that uncertainty also creates the conditions for new insight. What researchers describe as “psychological entropy” can generate anxiety, but when explored rather than avoided, it becomes the starting point for meaning-making and creative reorganisation.

Art interrupts the impulse toward immediate resolution. When we engage with art that does not resolve itself immediately, the brain shifts from problem-solving into exploration. Multiple interpretations can coexist. The need to conclude softens. Instead of closing uncertainty, we learn to remain present within it. In this sense, art becomes a training ground for hope.

Art as a space that holds uncertainty

In my series Hopepunk, Human Cartography, and Sparks of Hope, I explore how hope moves between present experience and future imagination. The works do not attempt to predict the future, but to make space for imagining and inhabiting more hopeful directions from where we stand today.

Each series approaches this differently. Hopepunk explores hope as an active stance — a quiet resistance against cynicism and disengagement. Human Cartography maps inner and relational landscapes, tracing how individuals orient themselves in times of change. Sparks of Hope focuses on moments of emergence — small signals of possibility that allow movement to begin again.

The artworks function as maps rather than answers. A map does not remove uncertainty. It helps us orient ourselves within it. Through layering — watercolor, digital reinvention, and interactive extensions — the work reflects a world where meaning unfolds over time. Interpretation changes as the viewer changes. The artwork becomes less an object and more a meeting place between perception, imagination, and reflection.

Art here does not resolve uncertainty. It holds it long enough for something else to emerge: attention, orientation, and the recognition that hope can exist even before certainty appears.

Hope as a present-day practice

Across contemporary cultural writing — from leadership discourse to long-form essays such as those explored in The Atlantic and The Marginalian — hope is increasingly described not as naive positivity but as an active stance. A decision to remain in relationship with the world even when outcomes remain unclear.

Mapping hope means asking:

What do I remain in relationship with?
What still matters enough to care for?
Where can agency exist, even in small forms?

Hope practiced this way becomes sustainable. It does not depend on certainty or success. It grows through attention, imagination, and continuation.

Mapping hope to remain human

When I say that I work with mapping hope as a present-day practice, I mean that hope is something we enact through orientation rather than expectation.

Hope does not eliminate uncertainty. It gives us a way to stay present inside it.

In an age shaped by artificial intelligence and accelerating change, this may be one of art’s most important roles — not to predict the future, but to help us remain human while it unfolds.

Mapping hope beyond the studio

Over time, through observing leaders, teams, and people navigating uncertainty, the focus of Mapping Hope began to take shape in my artistic work.

In conversations around difficult decisions, transformation, and change, I repeatedly encountered the same challenge. The difficulty was rarely a lack of information. It was the absence of orientation — how to move forward without certainty, how to remain connected to what matters when outcomes were unclear, and how to sustain agency in complex situations.

These observations gradually found their way into the studio. Art became a space where these questions could be explored more slowly and more openly. Where uncertainty did not need to be resolved immediately, and where imagination and reflection could coexist. The artworks became maps rather than answers — ways of making visible the process of staying present while moving forward.

In this sense, art and leadership meet in a shared territory. Both require attention, judgment, and the willingness to act without complete clarity. Mapping hope, then, is not about optimism. It is a practice of orientation — a way of continuing to engage, to care, and to shape what comes next while the future remains open.

Perhaps hope was never something waiting for us in the future, but something we practice in how we meet the present.

Pax Tecum — On Hope, Presence, and the Quiet Architecture of Connection

We live in a time saturated with forecasts.
Dashboards measure risk, reports map uncertainty, and scenarios multiply faster than our capacity to absorb them. Yet what many people describe as missing is not information — but orientation. A sense of where we stand in relation to one another, and what kind of future we are actually capable of shaping together.

Hope, in this context, is often misunderstood. It is either dismissed as naïve optimism or reduced to a private feeling — something one either has or lacks. But across disciplines, from futures research to leadership studies, a different understanding is quietly emerging: hope is not a mood; it is a capacity. One that can be cultivated, strengthened, and shared.

An ancient phrase helps illuminate this shift. Pax tecum — “peace be with you” — is often heard as a polite blessing or a religious remnant. Historically, however, it named something far more precise: a relational state. Peace not as the absence of conflict, but as a quality of presence between people. A condition that allows trust, imagination, and agency to arise.

Seen through this lens, pax tecum becomes unexpectedly contemporary.

Hope Is Not a Feeling — It Is a Capacity

Recent research from the Smithsonian Institution provides compelling evidence for this relational view of hope. In the analysis presented in Smithsonian Magazine’s article “What It Will Take to Inspire Hope for a Better Tomorrow”, researchers examined the impact of the Smithsonian’s FUTURES exhibition on visitors’ mindsets.

The findings were striking.

People did not become more hopeful because they were reassured. They became more hopeful because they were engaged. When visitors encountered concrete, plural visions of the future — grounded in science, imagination, and human agency — they reported:

a stronger sense of hope,
greater belief in collective action,
and increased motivation to contribute to shaping what comes next.

Hope, in other words, emerged when people could mentally inhabit possible futures. The research highlights the importance of what psychologists sometimes call “mental time travel”: the ability to imagine oneself forward in time in a way that feels tangible and participatory.

This reframes hope as something fundamentally relational and active. It arises not in isolation, but in a shared field of meaning — when people feel that their presence matters and their actions connect to something larger.

The Relational Turn: Why Trust Matters More Than Certainty

This understanding aligns closely with insights from the World Economic Forum, which in recent years has repeatedly emphasized trust, listening, and social cohesion as core conditions for resilience. In a world shaped by overlapping crises — climate, geopolitics, technology, and social fragmentation — stability can no longer be produced through control and prediction alone.

Instead, resilience depends on relational capacity:

the ability to listen across differences,
to sustain cooperation under pressure,
and to hold shared direction even when certainty is unavailable.

What is notable here is the shift in emphasis. The question is no longer only what systems we build, but how people relate within them. Trust is not treated as a soft value, but as a structural prerequisite. Without it, even the most advanced systems fail to adapt.

In this sense, pax is not passive calm. It is coherence in relationship — the invisible architecture that allows systems, communities, and collaborations to hold together.

Psychological Safety: The Modern Language of Relational Peace

Leadership research offers a complementary perspective. Studies shared via INSEAD Knowledge and the Harvard Business Review consistently show that teams learn, adapt, and innovate most effectively when psychological safety is present.

Psychological safety describes environments where people feel able to:

speak honestly,
take interpersonal risks,
admit uncertainty,
and contribute without fear of humiliation.

Importantly, this is not about comfort or consensus. It is about relational permission — the sense that one’s presence is legitimate and one’s voice matters.

Read through a longer historical lens, psychological safety looks remarkably similar to what earlier traditions described as peace in relation. Not harmony as sameness, but attentive coexistence. A shared field in which differences can be held without fragmentation.

Again, pax tecum surfaces — not as theology, but as an early articulation of a condition modern research now measures and names.

Futures Thinking: Hope Requires Imagination With Structure

If hope is a capacity, then imagination is one of its primary muscles. This is a central insight in the work of the Institute for the Future. IFTF emphasizes that hope does not emerge from abstract optimism, but from practiced imagination — the disciplined exploration of multiple possible futures.

Futures thinking strengthens agency because it:

expands what people perceive as possible,
makes uncertainty navigable rather than paralyzing,
and transforms fear into curiosity.

This aligns closely with the Smithsonian findings: people become more hopeful when futures feel inhabitable, not idealized. When imagination is grounded, shared, and structured, it becomes a social capability rather than a private escape.

Once again, the relational dimension is central. Imagination gains power when it is collective — when futures are explored together, not assigned from above.

Rethinking Peace as Relation

Placed alongside these insights, pax tecum can be understood as a contemporary concept with deep roots.

Not peace as silence.
Not hope as promise.
But peace as the condition that allows hope to function.

It names a quality of presence in which:

people feel seen rather than managed,
differences can coexist without erasure,
and imagination is safe enough to unfold.

In times of acceleration — shaped by AI, ecological thresholds, and societal strain — this relational quality may be one of the most underdeveloped capacities we have. Yet research across fields converges on the same conclusion: without it, neither innovation nor resilience is sustainable.

Hope, trust, safety, imagination — these are not separate domains. They are interdependent expressions of how we stand in relation to one another.

From Reflection to Practice — and to Lived Experience

Reflection, on its own, is rarely enough.
If hope is a capacity, it needs rhythm.
If presence is relational, it needs practice — and space.

This is where Grounded Becoming enters as a quiet companion to the ideas explored here. Structured as a January calendar, it offers small, daily invitations: moments of pause, reframing, and attentive noticing. Not as a program to complete, but as a way of cultivating continuity at the threshold of a new year.

Grounded Becoming draws on the same insights surfaced across research and reflection:

that hope grows through repeated acts of attention,
that agency is strengthened through reflection rather than force,
and that psychological capital is built gently, over time.

It works with inner capacities such as authenticity, hope, resilience, and optimism, while also acknowledging the broader relational field — trust, autonomy, sensemaking, and shared understanding. In this sense, it can be read as a contemporary, secular practice aligned with pax tecum: peace not as withdrawal, but as attentive participation in what is becoming.

To Grounded Becoming Program

Alongside this reflective practice, these questions will also take material form in an upcoming art exhibition, Radiant Constellations. There, the themes of hope, presence, and connection are explored not through argument, but through experience — as points of light held together by the spaces in between. The exhibition does not seek to illustrate the ideas above, but to hold a space where they can be felt.

Perhaps this is where hope begins to change register.

Not as certainty.
Not as promise.
But as a lived capacity — practiced over time, shared in relation, and occasionally glimpsed in moments of quiet recognition.

That we are still capable of holding one another in view.

Pax Tecum — Om hopp, närvaro och relationens tysta bärighet

Vi lever i en tid där framtiden ständigt förutsägs.
Instrumentpaneler mäter risk, rapporter kartlägger osäkerhet och scenarier förökar sig snabbare än vår förmåga att ta dem till oss. Ändå är det många som beskriver att det som saknas inte är information — utan orientering. En känsla för var vi står i relation till varandra, och vilken sorts framtid vi faktiskt är kapabla att forma tillsammans.

Hopp, i detta sammanhang, missförstås ofta. Det avfärdas antingen som naiv optimism eller reduceras till en privat känsla — något man antingen har eller saknar. Men över discipliner, från framtidsforskning till ledarskapsstudier, växer en annan förståelse långsamt fram: hopp är inte ett sinnestillstånd; det är en förmåga. En förmåga som kan odlas, stärkas och delas.

Ett gammalt uttryck hjälper till att belysa denna förskjutning. Pax tecum — ”frid vare med dig” — uppfattas ofta som en artig välsignelse eller en religiös rest. Historiskt betecknade det dock något långt mer precist: ett relationellt tillstånd. Frid inte som frånvaro av konflikt, utan som en kvalitet av närvaro mellan människor. Ett tillstånd som gör det möjligt för tillit, föreställningsförmåga och handlingskraft att uppstå.

Sett genom detta raster framstår pax tecum som oväntat samtida.

Hopp är inte en känsla — det är en förmåga

en starkare känsla av hopp,

Hopp uppstod, med andra ord, när människor kunde föreställa sig och leva sig in i möjliga framtider. Forskningen lyfter fram betydelsen av det som psykologer ibland kallar ”mental tidsresa”: förmågan att föreställa sig själv framåt i tiden på ett sätt som känns konkret och deltagande.

Detta omformulerar hopp som något i grunden relationellt och aktivt. Det uppstår inte i isolering, utan i ett gemensamt meningsfält — när människor upplever att deras närvaro har betydelse och att deras handlingar hänger samman med något större.

Den relationella vändningen: varför tillit betyder mer än visshet

Denna förståelse ligger nära insikter från World Economic Forum, som under senare år återkommande har betonat tillit, lyssnande och social sammanhållning som grundläggande villkor för resiliens. I en värld präglad av överlappande kriser — klimat, geopolitik, teknologi och social fragmentering — kan stabilitet inte längre skapas enbart genom kontroll och förutsägelse.

I stället beror resiliens på relationell kapacitet:

förmågan att lyssna över skillnader,
att upprätthålla samarbete under press,
och att hålla en gemensam riktning även när visshet saknas.

Det anmärkningsvärda här är förskjutningen i fokus. Frågan är inte längre bara vilka system vi bygger, utan hur människor relaterar inom dem. Tillit behandlas inte som ett mjukt värde, utan som en strukturell förutsättning. Utan den misslyckas även de mest avancerade system att anpassa sig.

I denna mening är pax inte ett passivt lugn. Det är sammanhang i relation — den osynliga arkitektur som gör det möjligt för system, gemenskaper och samarbeten att hålla ihop.

Psykologisk trygghet: det moderna språket för relationell frid

Ledarskapsforskning erbjuder ett kompletterande perspektiv. Studier som lyfts fram via INSEAD Knowledge och Harvard Business Review visar konsekvent att team lär sig, anpassar sig och förnyar sig mest effektivt när psykologisk trygghet finns på plats.

Psykologisk trygghet beskriver miljöer där människor känner sig fria att:

tala öppet,
ta mellanmänskliga risker,
erkänna osäkerhet,
och bidra utan rädsla för förödmjukelse.

Detta handlar inte om bekvämlighet eller konsensus. Det handlar om relationellt tillståndsgivande — upplevelsen av att ens närvaro är legitim och att ens röst räknas.

Sett genom ett längre historiskt perspektiv liknar psykologisk trygghet i hög grad det som tidigare traditioner beskrev som frid i relation. Inte harmoni som likriktning, utan uppmärksam samexistens. Ett gemensamt fält där olikheter kan bäras utan att leda till splittring.

Återigen träder pax tecum fram — inte som teologi, utan som en tidig formulering av ett tillstånd som modern forskning i dag mäter och namnger.

Framtidstänkande: hopp kräver fantasi med struktur

Om hopp är en förmåga, är fantasi en av dess viktigaste muskler. Detta är en central insikt i arbetet vid Institute for the Future. IFTF betonar att hopp inte uppstår ur abstrakt optimism, utan ur praktiserad föreställningsförmåga — den disciplinerade utforskningen av flera möjliga framtider.

Framtidstänkande stärker handlingskraft eftersom det:

vidgar vad människor uppfattar som möjligt,
gör osäkerhet hanterbar snarare än förlamande,
och omvandlar rädsla till nyfikenhet.

Detta ligger nära Smithsonian-resultaten: människor blir mer hoppfulla när framtider upplevs som möjliga att leva i, snarare än idealiserade. När fantasin är förankrad, delad och strukturerad blir den en social förmåga snarare än en privat tillflykt.

Återigen är den relationella dimensionen avgörande. Fantasi får kraft när den är kollektiv — när framtider utforskas tillsammans, inte tilldelas uppifrån.

Att ompröva frid som relation

I ljuset av dessa insikter kan pax tecum förstås som ett samtida begrepp med djupa rötter.

Inte frid som tystnad.
Inte hopp som löfte.
Utan frid som det tillstånd som gör hopp möjligt.

Det betecknar en kvalitet av närvaro där:

människor känner sig sedda snarare än styrda,
olikheter kan samexistera utan att suddas ut,
och fantasin är tillräckligt trygg för att veckla ut sig.

I en tid av acceleration — präglad av AI, ekologiska gränser och samhällelig belastning — kan denna relationella kvalitet vara en av våra mest underutvecklade förmågor. Ändå pekar forskning över fält på samma slutsats: utan den är varken innovation eller resiliens hållbar.

Hopp, tillit, trygghet, fantasi — dessa är inte separata domäner. De är ömsesidigt beroende uttryck för hur vi står i relation till varandra.

Från reflektion till praktik — och till levd erfarenhet

Reflektion i sig är sällan tillräcklig.
Om hopp är en förmåga behöver den rytm.
Om närvaro är relationell behöver den praktik — och rum.

Santa and the Unanswered Questions of Life

A Nordic reflection on trust, guardianship, and the invisible forces that sustain us.
Inspired by an earlier post, “The Trusted Tomten – a background check”

“The midwinter cold is hard,

All are asleep on the lonely farm,
deep in the midnight hour.

snow gleams white on pine and fir,

As human beings, we need stories to understand the world. Not to provide all the answers — but to help us live with the questions.

We need images, rhythms, and figures that help us find our way when darkness is dense and the future has not yet taken shape. And we need to believe in something. Not necessarily in the grand or spectacular — but in what endures. What watches. What continues its work even when everyone else is asleep.

We also need trusted leaders. Not those who are most visible, but those who carry the greatest responsibility.

The Tomten is just such a figure.

Pause for a moment:
Which stories help you orient yourself when the future is still unclear?
Who — or what — watches over your life?

The Invisible One Who Does Not Need to Be Seen

The roots of Santa Claus are often described through a Western narrative. History Today traces him to a blend of Saint Nicholas and Father Christmas, explaining how migration shaped his identity — and how, around 1820, he acquired his reindeer. It is an interesting story. But it is incomplete.

It overlooks the Scandinavian Tomten. Which is understandable. He cannot be seen.

In a time when visibility is often mistaken for significance, the Tomten reminds us of something else: that the most important work often happens quietly.

Before Santa, the Tomten

In the Nordic countries, Tomtar and Nisses have existed since Viking and Old Norse times. They belong to the farm, the soil, the animals, and the household. They appear around midwinter — when nights are longest and human dependence on nature is most profound.

The Tomten was never primarily a fairy tale. He was real — as belief, presence, and practice.

So real that both church and secular authorities attempted, already in the 14th century, to ban belief in him. Contemporary sources speak of tomte gods — an echo of an older worldview in which the Tomten stood at the threshold between humanity, nature, and something greater.

The Nordic Tomten is not grand.
He works in the small and the near — quietly, practically, close to the earth.
Where he is treated with care, he responds with steadfast loyalty.

Take with you:
Trust and responsibility have deep roots — older than our modern institutions.

The Serving Guardian

The Tomten protects the house, the family, and the animals. He helps with daily tasks, keeps watch while others sleep, and ensures that what has been entrusted to him continues to function.

But he can also be quick-tempered. Ignored, mocked, or forgotten, he can become dangerous. This makes the Tomten surprisingly modern.

He is a servant leader — one who gives by nature, yet also needs to be seen, acknowledged, and respected. Not for power, but for responsibility.

Reflection:
When have you carried responsibility in silence?
And when has someone done so for you?

Here the Tomten meets a far older theme: animals as guardians.

Animals as Guardians Between Worlds

In Nordic folklore — as in many cultures — animals are not subordinate to humans. They are companions and guardians. They carry memory, warnings, and wisdom between worlds.

This theme was central to my exhibition earlier this year:
Eyes Woven with Time – Guardians of the Invisible Thread, where animal gazes held both what has been and what has not yet been spoken.

When Viktor Rydberg’s Tomten makes his nightly rounds, this is exactly what he does. He tends to the animals first. The horses. The cows. The sheep. The hens. The dog — who recognizes his Tomten, because they are old friends. It is a mutual guardianship. They watch over one another.

The Tomten and Life’s Unanswered Questions

Rydberg’s poem makes the Tomten more than a farm guardian.
He becomes an existential figure — one who carries questions that cannot be resolved.

“Generation followed generation, bloomed, aged, departed — but where to?”

The Tomten reflects on time. On the passing of generations. On the direction of life itself. He has no answers. But he remains with the question.

Perhaps that is what makes him a guardian: not that he knows — but that he watches.

The Tomten and the Fox — An Ethics of Care

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) was one of Sweden’s most beloved authors, known for stories that combined deep moral clarity with compassion, courage, and respect for the vulnerable. While she is internationally known for characters such as Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, and Karlsson-on-the-Roof, her interpretation of the Tomten reveals another side of her authorship — quiet, ethical, and deeply humane.

In The Tomten and the Fox, she gives the Tomten a new voice. Here, the Tomten becomes a moral compass.

The fox, Mickel, is hungry. It is Christmas Eve. And winter is long.

The Tomten stops the fox from taking a hen — not through punishment, but through understanding.

When a child leaves out a bowl of porridge, the Tomten shares it with Mickel, and promises to share again each night if the fox needs it.

In the Tomten’s world, care is not about rules — but about relationship.

This is his ethics: not law, but care. not power, but responsibility. not control, but sharing.

The Porridge on the Step

When I was a child, we always placed a bowl of porridge with an extra knob of butter outside on Christmas Eve. It was our way of saying thank you — for the year that had passed, for protection, for what had held.

And in the morning, the bowl was always empty. So the Tomten must have been there. Right?

What the Tomten Still Teaches Us

The Tomten still has something to teach us. Keeping watch does not have to be heavy. It can be a quiet choice. A way of being present — for one another, for what has been entrusted to us, for life unfolding even in silence.

From the Tomten we can learn to:
– watch without demanding attention
– take responsibility for what is close
– remain with the question, even when answers are absent
– understand care as action, not principle

The Tomten reminds us that guardians are not always visible. They are not loud. They ask for no recognition. Yet they hold the world together through care.

So when the midwinter night feels long, we can remember that someone is watching. And that, in small moments, we too can become guardians — for one another, for nature, for what is fragile and precious.

And perhaps that is where hope resides: in knowing that we are not alone in the darkness, and that there is always someone awake — sometimes, even ourselves.

From Guardianship to Hope — Shared Sparks in the Present

These reflections on the Tomten — on quiet guardianship, care without spectacle, and staying present with unanswered questions — also extend beyond the written word.

They are echoed in the ongoing group exhibition Sparks of Hope, where I exhibit together with other artists. The exhibition brings together different voices and expressions, yet is united by a shared exploration of hope — not as certainty or promise, but as something fragile, relational, and quietly sustained.

Here, hope appears in small gestures rather than grand declarations. In materials, marks, and images that invite slowing down, noticing, and staying with what is unfinished. Much like the Tomten, the works do not seek attention — they keep watch.

On December 29, the exhibition closes with a finissage. Not as a conclusion, but as a moment of gathering — a space for conversation with fellow artists and visitors about the year that is ending, the questions we carry forward, and the forms of care and guardianship we may choose to practice in the year ahead.

In the calm after the holidays, the finissage becomes a shared pause — a small, collective spark — reminding us that hope often lives not in answers, but in presence.

Viktor Rydberg (1828–1895) var en svensk författare, poet och tänkare vars verk ofta kretsade kring etik, tro, mytologi och människans existentiella villkor. Dikten Tomten, skriven 1881, är en av hans mest älskade texter – inte för att den ger svar, utan för att den vågar stanna kvar vid livets obesvarade frågor.

Som människor behöver vi berättelser för att förstå världen. Inte för att få alla svar – utan för att kunna leva med frågorna. Vi behöver bilder, rytmer och gestalter som hjälper oss att orientera oss när mörkret är tätt och framtiden ännu inte syns. Och vi behöver tro på något. Inte nödvändigtvis på det storslagna – utan på det som håller. Det som vakar. Det som fortsätter sitt arbete även när alla andra sover.

Vi behöver också betrodda ledare. Inte de som syns mest, utan de som bär mest ansvar. Tomten är just en sådan gestalt.

Den osynlige som inte behöver synas

Jultomtens rötter beskrivs ofta genom en västerländsk berättelse. History Today spårar honom till en blandning av Sankt Nikolaus och Father Christmas, och berättar hur migration formade hans identitet – och hur han runt år 1820 fick sina renar. Det är en intressant historia. Men den är ofullständig.

Den missar den skandinaviska tomten. Vilket är förståeligt. Han kan ju inte ses.

I en tid där synlighet ofta förväxlas med betydelse, påminner tomten oss om något annat: att det viktigaste arbetet ofta sker i det tysta.

Tomten före tomten

I Norden har vi haft tomtar och nissar sedan vikingatid och fornnordisk tid. De hör till gården, jorden, djuren och hushållet. De visar sig kring midvintern – när nätterna är som längst och människans beroende av naturens krafter är som störst.

Tomten var aldrig en saga i första hand. Han fanns på riktigt. Så verklig att kyrkliga och världsliga myndigheter redan på 1300-talet försökte förbjuda tron på honom. I samtida källor talas det om tomtegudar – ett eko av en äldre världsbild där tomten stod i gränslandet mellan människa, natur och något större.

Den nordiska tomten är inte storslagen. Han verkar i det lilla – lågmält, praktiskt och nära jorden. Där han behandlas väl, svarar han med trofasthet.

Att ta med sig:
Tillit och ansvar har djupa rötter – äldre än våra moderna institutioner.

Den tjänande väktaren

Vår tomtenisse skyddar huset, familjen och djuren. Han hjälper till med sysslor, vakar när andra sover och ser till att det som anförtrotts honom fungerar.

Men han är också lättretlig. Ignoreras han, hånas eller glöms bort kan han bli farlig. Detta gör tomten märkligt modern.

Han är en tjänande ledare – en som ger av sin natur, men som också behöver bli sedd, erkänd och respekterad. Inte för sin makt, utan för sitt ansvar.

Reflektion:
När har du själv burit ansvar i det tysta? Och när har någon annan gjort det för dig?

Här möter tomten ett större och mycket gammalt tema:
djuren som beskyddare.

Djuren som väktare mellan världar

I nordisk folktro – liksom i många andra kulturer – är djuren inte underordnade människan. De är följeslagare och väktare. De bär minnen, varningar och visdom mellan världar.

Detta tema stod i centrum för min utställning från maj i år: Eyes Woven with Time – Guardians of the Invisible Thread, där djurens blickar bar både det förflutna och det ännu osagda

När Viktor Rydbergs tomte går sin runda på gården är det just detta han gör. Han ser till djuren först. Hästarna. Korna. Fåren. Hönsen. Hunden – som känner igen sin tomte, för de är gamla vänner.

Det är ett ömsesidigt beskydd. De vakar över varandra.

Tomten och livets obesvarade frågor

Rydbergs dikt gör tomten till mer än en gårdsväktare.
Han blir en existentiell gestalt – en som bär frågorna som inte låter sig lösas.

”Släkte följde på släkte snart, blomstrade, åldrades, gick – men vart?”

Tomten grubblar över tiden. Över släktledens gång. Över livets riktning. Han har inga svar. Men han stannar kvar vid frågan.

Kanske är det just detta som gör honom till en väktare: inte att han vet – utan att han vakar.

Tomten och räven – omsorgens etik

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) var en av Sveriges mest älskade författare, känd för berättelser som förenar moralisk klarhet med medkänsla, mod och respekt för det sårbara. Internationellt är hon mest känd för gestalter som Pippi Långstrump, Emil i Lönneberga och Karlsson på taket, men i hennes tolkning av tomten framträder en annan sida av hennes författarskap – stillsam, etisk och djupt human.

I Tomten och räven ger hon Tomten en ny röst. Här möter vi tomten som moralisk kompass.

Räven Mickel är hungrig. Det är julafton. Och vintern är lång. Tomten stoppar räven från att ta en höna – men inte genom straff. Genom förståelse. När barnet ställer ut gröten delar Tomten den med Mickel. Och lovar att dela varje natt om räven behöver.

Omsorg, i tomtens värld, handlar inte om regler – utan om relation.

Detta är tomtens etik: inte lag, utan omsorg. inte makt, utan ansvar. inte kontroll, utan delande.

Gröten på trappan

När jag var liten ställde vi alltid ut en skål med gröt och en extra klick smör på julafton. Det var vårt sätt att säga tack – för året som gått, för skyddet, för det som fungerat.

Och på morgonen var skålen alltid tom.

Så Tomten måste ha varit där.
Eller hur?

Vad vi fortfarande kan lära av tomten

Tomten har fortfarande något att lära oss.

Att vaka behöver inte vara tungt. Det kan vara ett stilla val. Ett sätt att finnas till – för varandra, för det som anförtrotts oss, för livet som pågår även när det är tyst.

Av tomten kan vi lära oss att:
– vaka utan att kräva uppmärksamhet
– ta ansvar för det som är nära
– stanna vid frågan, även när svaret saknas
– förstå omsorg som handling, inte princip

Tomten påminner oss om att väktare inte alltid syns. De hörs inte. De kräver inget erkännande. Men de håller världen samman genom sin omsorg.

Så när midvinternatten känns lång kan vi minnas att någon vakar. Och att vi, i små ögonblick, också kan vara väktare – för varandra, för naturen, för det sköra och värdefulla.

Och kanske är det just där hoppet bor: i vetskapen om att vi inte är ensamma i mörkret,
och att det alltid finns någon som är vaken – ibland till och med vi själva.

När konsten blir en gåva av närvaro

När året går mot sina stillsammare dagar söker vi ofta gåvor som sträcker sig bortom det dekorativa och det nya. Gåvor som bär mening. Gåvor man kan leva med, återvända till och låta veckla ut sig varsamt över tid. En gåva av närvaro är inte något som kräver uppmärksamhet – det är något som finns kvar.

Ljuset vi bär tillsammans

Vid tröskeln till ljuset

Det finns något djupt mänskligt i att stiga in i mörkret med en liten låga i händerna. Inte ett strålkastarljus. Inte ett löfte om att allt ska bli tydligt. Bara tillräckligt med ljus för att ta nästa steg.

Detta är också vad äktenskap och sann vänskap är i sitt början: inte en förklaring om att allt är känt, utan en gemensam vilja att ta steget fram tillsammans, med endast nästa steg upplyst.

I en värld präglad av hastighet, ständiga signaler och system som sällan tvekar, känns denna gest oväntat samtida. Vi omges av krav på tydlighet och beslutsamhet, även när livet självt vägrar vara tydligt.

Detta är vad Lucia erbjuder oss — inte som ett skådespel, utan som en praktik som har upprepats i århundraden. En människa stiger upp tidigt, går in i mörkret och bär ljus för andra. Meningen uppstår inte genom förklaring. Den uppstår genom handling.

Lucia träder fram vid en av årets djupaste trösklar, när natten känns tung och ljusets återkomst ännu bara är ett löfte. Långt före moderna kalendrar kände människor denna stund i sina kroppar — nattens tyngd, längtan efter återkomst. I olika kulturer och klimat har människor markerat sådana trösklar med ljusritualer: gester formade av årstid, geografi och gemensam överlevnad, snarare än av tro allena — praktiker som hjälper oss att orientera oss när vägen framåt är som svårast att urskilja.

Ett ljus som förblir mänskligt

I många moderna berättelser framställs ljus som seger: klarhet över förvirring, hastighet över långsamhet, svar över frågor. Vi uppmuntras att röra oss snabbt, fatta beslut tidigt och framstå som säkra — även när vi inte är det.

Lucia berättar en stillsammare historia. Lågan darrar. Bäraren är synlig, sårbar, mänsklig. Mörkret finns kvar. Lucias ljus besegrar inte mörkret. Det följer med det.

Detta är det stilla löfte som ligger i hjärtat av äktenskapet, och av sann vänskap: inte att undanröja osäkerhet eller kamp, utan att stanna kvar i den — att gå bredvid, att fortsätta bära ljus även när det fladdrar.

Detta sätt att förstå ljus — inte som erövring, utan som stillsam, inneboende belysning — speglas i iakttagelser av jordljus (earthlight): det mjuka sken som månen får av solljus som reflekteras från jorden, först tydligt beskrivet av Leonardo da Vinci. Jordljuset fördriver inte natten; det gör den synlig, på samma sätt som Lucias ljus visar vägen steg för steg.

Denna förståelse av ljus som orientering snarare än seger ekar genom en lång tradition av reflekterande tänkande — från Hannah Arendts texter om ”mörka tider” till samtida essäer som utforskar hur mening bärs, snarare än påtvingas, när vissheten faller bort. Ljus är i detta perspektiv inte makt. Det är närvaro.

Mycket av livet idag levs inte i stunder av visshet, utan i perioder där riktningen är delvis oklar och svaren kommer långsamt. I sådana tider är ljus inte något som undanröjer osäkerhet — det är något som gör rörelse möjlig trots den.

Lucia påminner oss om att ljus inte behöver vara starkt för att vara meningsfullt. Det behöver vara närvarande.

Hopp som vi bär tillsammans

Ett Luciatåg handlar inte om en röst. Det handlar om många röster som håller samma rytm. Ingen skyndar före. Ingen går ensam. Här är hopp inte en inre känsla som ska framkallas på kommando. Det är något som görs tillsammans.

Så också i äktenskap och sann vänskap: hopp är inte något en person bär ensam. Det skapas i rytm — i att dyka upp, i att lyssna, i små handlingar av omsorg som gång på gång säger: du är inte ensam på denna väg.

Någon stiger upp tidigt för att andra ska mötas av ljus. Någon sjunger så att tystnaden känns hållen, inte tom. Någon bär en låga i vetskapen om att den kan fladdra — och bär den ändå.

Många av oss bär idag vår osäkerhet ensamma — stilla, effektivt, utan sång eller procession. Vi uppmanas att hantera den, omformulera den, optimera den. Lucia erbjuder en annan bild: osäkerhet som hålls tillsammans, i mänsklig takt, med röster som bär snarare än konkurrerar.

I en värld som ofta behandlar hopp som ett individuellt tankesätt, påminner Lucia oss om att hopp är relationellt. Det blir hållbart när det delas, får rytm och tar kropp. Detta gäller lika mycket i familjer och gemenskaper som i ledarskap, omsorg och skapande arbete. Vi behöver inte alltid lösningar. Lucia hör hemma i en tid av trösklar — mellan avslut och början, mellan det som varit och det som ännu inte tagit form.

Det är lockande att se sprickor i våra liv som misslyckanden: avbrott i planer, identiteter eller berättelser. Men ljus är ofta som mest synligt där något är öppet. En låga behöver luft för att brinna. Ljus behöver utrymme för att ta sig in.

Denna stillsammare förståelse av ljus har länge levt i konst och poesi — till exempel i Emily Dickinsons vinterrader om ett ”visst snett ljus”, numera en del av vår gemensamma skatt. Ett sådant ljus förklarar inte och löser inte upp. Det förändrar varseblivningen. Det lämnar ett spår.

Vissa avbrott är inte problem att lösa, utan passager som gör känslighet möjlig. De saktar ner oss. De får oss att lägga märke till. De bjuder in en annan sorts uppmärksamhet. Lucias låga förnekar inte skörhet. Den är beroende av den.

Lucia har förändrats många gånger. Vem som bär ljuset, hur det ser ut, hur det låter — allt detta fortsätter att utvecklas. Och ändå förblir kärnhandlingen orörd: någon väljer att vara ljus för andra.

Kanske är detta vad det innebär att gifta sig eller bli sanna vänner: att varje dag välja att vara ljus för varandra — inte hela vägen, utan nästa steg — och att lita på att detta är nog.

I tider när visshet är knapp och världen känns sönderbruten kan detta vara tillräckligt. En liten låga. En gemensam takt. Ett stilla åtagande att gå tillsammans genom mörkret.

Och ibland är det så ljuset väljer att stanna.

There is something deeply human about stepping into darkness with a small flame in your hands. Not a floodlight. Not a promise that everything will be clear. Just enough light to take the next step.

This is also what marriage and true friendship is at its beginning: not a declaration that everything is known, but a shared willingness to step forward together with only the next step illuminated.

In a world shaped by speed, constant signals, and systems that rarely hesitate, this gesture feels unexpectedly contemporary. We are surrounded by demands for clarity and decisiveness, even when life itself refuses to be clear.

This is what Lucia offers us — not as a spectacle, but as a practice that has been repeated for centuries. A person rises early, enters the dark, and carries light for others. The meaning does not come from explanation. It comes from being done.

Lucia appears at one of the year’s deepest thresholds, when night feels heavy and the return of light is still only a promise. Long before modern calendars, people felt this moment in their bodies — the weight of night, the longing for return. Across cultures and climates, humans have marked such thresholds with rituals of light: gestures shaped by season, geography, and shared survival, rather than belief alone — practices that help people orient themselves when the way forward is hardest to see.

A Light That Stays Human

In many modern stories, light is portrayed as triumph: clarity over confusion, speed over slowness, answers over questions. We are encouraged to move quickly, decide early, and appear certain — even when we are not.

Lucia tells a quieter story. The candle trembles. The bearer is visible, vulnerable, human. The darkness remains. Lucia’s light does not defeat the dark. It accompanies it.

This is the quiet promise at the heart of marriage, and true friendship, as well: not to eliminate uncertainty or struggle, but to remain present within it — to stay, to walk alongside, to keep a light burning even when it trembles.

This way of understanding light — not as conquest, but as gentle, inherent illumination — is echoed in observations of earthlight: the soft glow the Moon receives from sunlight reflected off Earth, first described with clarity by Leonardo da Vinci. Earthlight does not banish night; it makes it visible, just as Lucia’s candle reveals the path step by step.

This understanding of light as orientation rather than victory echoes a long tradition of reflective thought — from Hannah Arendt’s writings on “dark times” to contemporary essays that explore how meaning is carried, not imposed, when certainty falls away. Light, in this view, is not power. It is presence.

Much of life today is not lived in moments of certainty, but in seasons where direction is partial and answers arrive slowly. In such times, light is not something that removes uncertainty — it is something that makes movement possible despite it.

Lucia reminds us that light does not need to be strong to be meaningful. It needs to be present.

Hope We Carry Together

A Lucia procession is not about one voice. It is about many voices holding the same rhythm. No one rushes ahead. No one walks alone.

Here, hope is not an inner feeling to be summoned on command. It is something enacted together.

So too in marriage and true friendship: hope is not something one person carries alone. It is created in rhythm — in showing up, in listening, in small acts of care that say, again and again, you are not alone on this path.

Someone gets up early so others may receive light. Someone sings so silence feels held, not empty. Someone carries a flame knowing it might flicker — and carries it anyway.

Many of us carry our uncertainty alone now — quietly, efficiently, without song or procession. We are told to manage it, reframe it, optimize it. Lucia offers a different image: uncertainty held together, at a human pace, with voices that support rather than compete.

In a world that often treats hope as an individual mindset, Lucia reminds us that hope is relational. It becomes sustainable when it is shared, paced, embodied. This is as true in families and communities as it is in leadership, care, and creative work. We do not always need solutions. Sometimes we need presence that says: you are not alone in this stretch of darkness.

Walking On, One Step at a Time

Lucia belongs to a season of thresholds — between endings and beginnings, between what has been and what has not yet taken shape.

It is tempting to see fractures in our lives as failures: disruptions in plans, identities, or narratives. Yet light is often most visible where something is open. A candle needs air to burn. Light needs space to enter.

This quieter understanding of light has long lived in art and poetry — for example in Emily Dickinson’s winter lines about a “certain slant of light,” now part of our shared treasure. Such light does not explain or resolve. It alters perception. It leaves a mark.

Some breaks are not problems to solve, but passages that make sensitivity possible. They slow us down. They make us notice. They invite a different kind of attention. Lucia’s flame does not deny fragility. It depends on it.

Lucia has changed many times. Who carries the light, how it looks, how it sounds — all of this continues to evolve. And yet the core act remains untouched: someone chooses to be light for others.

Perhaps this is what it means to marry or become true friends: to choose, each day, to be light for one another — not the whole path, but the next step — and to trust that this is enough.

In times when certainty is scarce and the world feels fractured, this may be enough. A small flame. A shared pace. A quiet commitment to walk together through the dark.

And sometimes, that is how light chooses to stay.

I Sprickornas Ljus – Hoppets Gnistor i En Föränderlig Tid

Det finns tider då livet känns utsträckt mellan det som varit och det som ännu håller på att bli. Stunder då det välbekanta förlorar sin form, då sammanhanget tunnas ut, då de platser vi en gång litade på för stabilitet börjar skifta under oss.

Och ändå, även i dessa mellanrum av ovisshet, uppstår ett stilla skimmer — en gnista vid medvetandets rand, en tyst ljusning i själva sprickan.

Det var detta skimmer som kallade mig att skapa Gnistor av Hopp — inte som en flykt från världens bristningar, utan som ett sätt att uppfatta ljuset som rör sig genom dem.

Tre sammanflätade inspirationer formade serien:
• Kintsugi, den japanska konsten att laga det som är trasigt med guld.
• Hopp, förstått inte som önsketänkande utan som en mänsklig förmåga som bär upp mening, uthållighet och framåtrörelse.
• Kreativ förstörelse, insikten att samhällen förnyar sig genom cykler av störning och återfödelse — en kraft som nu accelereras av artificiell intelligens.

Tillsammans formar dessa perspektiv en filosofi om tillblivelse — en förståelse som antyder att våra sprickor inte är slutpunkter, utan början.

1. Kintsugi — Där Ljuset Lär Sig Tränga In

I Kintsugi döljs inte en bruten skål, och den återskapas inte till det den en gång var; den blir något nytt. Det reparerade objektet bär sin fraktur öppet, förgyllt och värdigt — brottet omvandlat till en linje av ljus.

Studier vid Musubi Academy fördjupade denna insikt. Deras tillvägagångssätt värdesätter närvaro framför perfektion, autenticitet framför genvägar och förnyelse framför förtäckning.

Man lär sig att röra sig långsamt, att lita på naturliga processer, att låta materialet undervisa. Till slut blir något stilla och radikalt tydligt: Reparation är inte motsatsen till brustenhet. Reparation är dess fortsättning.

Det förändrar hur man ser själva sprickan — inte som sammanbrott, utan som en öppning.

2. Hopp — En Förmåga som Löper Genom Osäkerheten

Hopp förväxlas ofta med optimism, men forskning visar att det är något mycket rikare. Psykologer, filosofer och neurovetare beskriver hopp som en förmåga: en väv av handlingskraft, föreställningsförmåga, relationer och mening.

Hopp påverkar hur vi tolkar utmaningar — inte som fasta hinder utan som skiftande landskap. Det formar vår återhämtning genom att ge oss en inre elasticitet. Det öppnar vägar för lärande och nya perspektiv. Det gör det möjligt att föreställa sig framtider som ännu inte finns. Och det fördjupar våra relationer genom tillit och gemensam riktning.

TACK-perspektivet: En karta över hopp i samhällen

I Stockholm Wellbeing Index reflekteras hopp genom TACK-dimensionerna:

• Togetherness -Tillsammanskap— hopp växer i samband.
• Agency – Handlingskraft— hopp stärks när våra val spelar roll.
• Coherence – Sammanhang— hopp trivs när livet har en rytm och en inre mening.
• Kinetics – Rörelse— hopp rör sig med känslan av framåtdrift.

Detta samspel återspeglas även i den kreativa processen.
I Gnistor av Hopp söker färgerna kontakt, kompositionerna vandrar från stillhet till rörelse, och digitala lager antyder något ännu ofullständigt — en riktning, en begynnelse. Hopp är inte verklighetsflykt. Det är förutsättningen för förändring.

3. Kreativ Förstörelse — När Världen Själv Brister Öppen

För samhällen och organisationer är skiften inte metafor, utan levd verklighet.

INSEAD-professorn Philippe Aghions Nobelprisbelönade forskning visar att förnyelse kräver att det gamla ger vika så att det nya kan uppstå. Denna rörelse är sällan mjuk — den förändrar marknader, strukturer och identiteter.

AI: Vår tids katalysator

AI förstärker denna cykel dramatiskt. Förändring som tidigare tog decennier sker nu på några år. Gränser upplöses, roller omformas, och både ledarskap och samhällsstrukturer behöver förnyas. Vi lever mitt i en historisk spricka — samtidigt oroande och full av möjligheter.

Kreativ förstörelse förklarar de stora samhällsrörelserna. Kintsugi visar hur sprickan kan bli vacker. Hopp ger oss kraften att fortsätta genom den. Dessa tre perspektiv utgör den konceptuella jord där Gnistor av Hopp växte fram.

4. Gnistor av Hopp — Ett Nytt Sätt att Se Sprickorna

Verken i Gnistor av Hopp föddes ur mötet mellan dessa idéer — inte som illustrationer, utan som känslomässiga och filosofiska svar på en värld i förändring.

Från Kintsugi ärver verken en vördnad för bristningen: linjer av ljus följer tänkta sprickor, färger samlas kring osynliga sömmar. Fokus ligger inte på det som gått förlorat, utan på det som försöker lysa igenom. Från hoppet lånar verken en inre rörelse — en drift mot förnyelse och återfunnen agens. Digitala lager förstärker denna känsla: rörelse, fragment, skimrande framtidsaningar.

Från kreativ förstörelse speglas vår samtid: branschers, identiteters och berättelsers upplösning blir inte misslyckanden, utan inbjudningar till något nytt. Tillsammans bildar dessa trådar ett visuellt språk där: sprickan blir möjlighet, bristningen information, förnyelsen en akt av föreställningskraft.

Gnistor av Hopp handlar inte om att återvända till det som var, utan om att urskilja det som vill träda fram.

5. När Destino möter Gnistor av Hopp

Destino är ett av konsthistoriens mest oväntade och förtrollande möten — ett samarbete mellan Salvador Dalí och Walt Disney som påbörjades 1945, när två helt olika världar korsades: surrealismens drömlandskap och animationens lekfulla precision. Projektet bröts abrupt, och Dalís skisser, målningar och visionära bildmanus föll i glömska, gömda djupt inne i Disneys arkiv som om de låg i vila i ett eget tidsrum.

När filmen till slut färdigställdes 2003, av ett litet hängivet team som vågade återuppväcka Dalís ursprungliga vision, uppstod något nästan alkemiskt. Fragmenten började röra sig. Symbolerna fick andning. Den poetiska logik som levt stilla i målningarna gled över i filmens språk, och resultatet blev en kort, drömlik film där tiden löses upp och längtan får form.

Och ändå — trots sitt mirakulösa ursprung och sin sällsynta skönhet — är Destino fortfarande förvånansvärt okänd. Ett gömt smycke i både konst- och filmhistorien, en visuell dikt som få människor har sett men som för den som upptäcker den öppnar en hel värld av rörelse, symbolik och magisk stillhet.

Den sex minuter långa kortfilmen låter Dalís symbolvärld röra sig genom animationens flöde.
Tiden mjuknar. Skuggor sträcks ut. Statyer spricker upp.
Och genom detta föränderliga landskap vandrar en kvinna — som om hon färdas genom sina egna drömmar, minnen och möjliga framtider.

Filmen är inte skapad för att förstås logiskt — utan för att kännas.
Den är en meditation över öde och längtan, och över hur transformation sker genom rörelse, inte genom förklaring.

När jag formade Gnistor av Hopp bar jag med mig just detta: tron att även i sprickorna — i det som håller på att upplösas — finns ett ljus som vill bryta fram. I Destino finns en rörelse mot något större, bortom tid och form; i Gnistor av Hopp är sprickorna själva vägarna där ljuset söker sig fram.

Här möts drömmens föränderlighet och hoppets envisa gnista.
Det brutna är inte slutet. Det är platsen där något nytt kan börja.
Likt i Destino kan en förändring, en skapelse, resa sig ur fragmenten — mjukt, oväntat och fyllt av möjlig mening.

När du betraktar verken i Gnistor av Hopp, låt dig minnas att det alltid finns rum för förnyelse, även i det osäkra.
Som i Destino: tiden stannar ibland —
men ljuset fortsätter att röra sig.

6. En Avslutande Inbjudan — Att Bli Genom Ljuset

En sanning vävs genom allt detta: Vi är alltid i tillblivelse. Kintsugi lär oss att hedra bristningen. Hopp lär oss att föreställa oss det som kommer. Kreativ förstörelse lär oss att förnyelsen är historiens rytm.

Sprickorna i vår värld är verkliga. Men det är också ljuset som samlas i dem. Min förhoppning är att Gnistor av Hopp erbjuder ett ögonblick av igenkänning — att du i dina egna sprickor, övergångar eller skiften ska kunna ana ett skimmer som bjuder dig vidare.

En gnista. En riktning. En början.

Luminous Fractures in a Changing – World Sparks of Hope

There are times when life feels stretched between what has been and what is still becoming. Moments when the familiar loosens its shape, when coherence thins,
when the places we once trusted for stability begin to shift beneath us.

And yet, even in those unsettled spaces, a subtle brightness emerges —
a spark at the edge of perception, a quiet shimmer inside the fracture.

That shimmer is what called me to create Sparks of Hope — not as an escape from the world’s ruptures, but as a way to notice the light that moves within them.

Three intertwined inspirations shaped the series:

• Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing the broken with gold.
• Hope, understood not as wishful thinking but as a human capability that sustains resilience, meaning, and forward motion.
• Creative Destruction, the insight that societies renew themselves through cycles of disruption and rebirth — a force now accelerated by artificial intelligence.

Together, they form a philosophy of becoming — one that suggests our cracks are not endings, but beginnings.

1. Kintsugi — Where Light Learns to Enter

In Kintsugi, a broken vessel is not hidden or restored to what it once was; it becomes something new.
The repaired object carries its fracture openly, gilded and dignified — the break transformed into a line of light.

Studying Kintsugi at Musubi Academy deepened this understanding for me. Their approach values presence over perfection, authenticity over shortcuts, and renewal over concealment.
You learn to move slowly,
to trust natural processes,
to let the material teach you.

Eventually you realise something quietly radical:

Repair is not the opposite of brokenness.
Repair is its continuation.

This shifted how I see breakage itself — not as collapse, but as an opening.

2. Hope — A Capability That Threads Through Uncertainty

Hope is often mistaken for optimism, yet research paints a richer picture.

Psychologists, philosophers, and neuroscientists describe hope as a capability, woven from agency, imagination, relationships, and meaning. It shapes the texture of our lives: influencing how we interpret challenges — not as fixed obstacles but as shifting landscapes; guiding how we recover by giving us the inner elasticity to rise again; informing how we learn by opening pathways for new insight; colouring how we imagine futures that do not yet exist; and transforming how we connect with others through deeper trust, compassion, and shared meaning.

Hope becomes not a fragile emotion, but a quiet architecture beneath everything we do — a foundation for resilience, creativity, and human connection.

The TACK Perspective: A Map of Hope in Societies

In the Stockholm Wellbeing Index, hope aligns closely with the TACK dimensions:

• Togetherness — hope grows in connection.
• Agency — hope strengthens when we feel our choices matter.
• Coherence — hope thrives when life has an inner rhythm.
• Kinetics — hope moves with the sense of forward progress.

These dynamics echo in the creative process.
In Sparks of Hope, colours reach toward one another, compositions shift from quietness into motion, and digital extensions reveal layers just beyond the visible — each a visual metaphor for hope’s momentum.

Hope is not escapism.
It is what makes transformation possible.

3. Creative Destruction — When the World Itself Breaks Open

For societies and organisations, breakage is not metaphor but lived reality.
INSEAD Professor Philippe Aghion’s Nobel-winning research on Creative Destruction shows that progress requires old structures to dissolve so new ones can emerge.
Innovation is rarely gentle; it reshapes markets, workplaces, and identities.

AI: The Catalyst of Our Time

AI intensifies this cycle dramatically.
It compresses decades of change into mere years, dissolving boundaries and demanding renewal in leadership, governance, and society.

We are living inside a historical fracture — both unsettling and full of potential.

Creative destruction explains the macro-cracks.
Kintsugi reveals how cracks can become beautiful.
Hope gives us the inner capacity to step forward through them.

These three forces form the conceptual ground from which the artworks arose.

4. Sparks of Hope — A New Way of Seeing the Cracks

The artworks in Sparks of Hope were inspired by this meeting point — not as illustrations of ideas, but as emotional and philosophical responses to a world in transition.

From Kintsugi, the pieces inherit a reverence for rupture.
Lines of light trace imagined fractures; colours gather around invisible seams.
The paintings are less concerned with what was lost, and more with what is trying to shine through.

From hope, they borrow a sense of inner movement — a drift toward renewal, the reassembly of coherence, the return of agency. Each piece holds a tension between what is visible now and what is just beginning to form. Digital layers extend this even further: motion, sound, or shimmering fragments revealing a quieter, unfolding future.

From creative destruction, the series reflects an awareness of our moment — a world where industries, identities, and narratives are breaking open not as failures, but as invitations. The artworks mirror this rhythm: dissolving edges, expanding centres, structures that seem to rebuild themselves as you look.

Together, these threads create a new visual language:
fracture as possibility,
brokenness as information,
renewal as an act of imagination.

Sparks of Hope is not about returning to what was,
but about recognising what wants to emerge.

5. When Destino Meets Sparks of Hope

Destino is one of art history’s most unexpected and enchanting encounters — a collaboration between Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney begun in 1945, when two entirely different worlds crossed paths: the dreamscapes of surrealism and the playful precision of animation.
The project was abruptly halted, and Dalí’s sketches, paintings, and visionary storyboards slipped into obscurity, hidden deep inside the Disney archives as if resting in their own pocket of time.

When the film was finally completed in 2003 by a small, dedicated team who dared to resurrect Dalí’s original vision, something almost alchemical occurred.
The fragments began to move.
The symbols drew breath.
The poetic logic that had lived quietly inside the paintings shifted into the language of film, resulting in a short, dreamlike work where time dissolves and longing takes shape.

And yet — despite its miraculous origin and rare beauty — Destino remains surprisingly unknown.
A hidden jewel in both art and film history, a visual poem that few have seen, but for those who discover it, it opens an entire world of motion, symbolism, and magical stillness.

The six-minute short allows Dalí’s symbolic universe to move through the flow of animation.
Time softens.
Shadows stretch.
Statues crack open.
And through this shifting landscape walks a woman — as if travelling through her own dreams, memories, and possible futures.

The film is not made to be understood logically — but to be felt.
It is a meditation on destiny and longing, and on how transformation happens through movement, not explanation.

When I shaped Sparks of Hope, I carried exactly this with me: the belief that even within the fractures — in what is coming apart — there is a light trying to break through.
In Destino, there is a movement toward something greater, beyond time and form; in Sparks of Hope, the fractures themselves become pathways through which the light finds its way.

Here, the fluidity of dreams meets the persistent spark of hope.
The broken is not the end.
It is the place where something new can begin.
As in Destino, a shift — a creation — can rise from fragments: gently, unexpectedly, and filled with possible meaning.

When you encounter the works in Sparks of Hope, let yourself remember that there is always room for renewal, even within uncertainty.

If there is a single truth woven through these ideas, it is this:

We are always in the process of becoming.

Kintsugi teaches us to honour the break.
Hope teaches us to imagine what comes next.
Creative destruction teaches us that renewal is not optional — it is the rhythm of history.

The cracks in our world are real.
But so is the light that gathers within them.

My wish is that Sparks of Hope offers a moment of recognition —
that within your own fractures, disruptions, or transitions,
you may glimpse a shimmer that invites you forward.

Gnistor av Hopp – när ljuset väljer att stanna

(The Story in English below)

Det börjar ofta med något nästan osynligt.
En rörelse i utkanten av blicken.
En värme som dröjer kvar fast vintern andas kyla.
En gnista.

Den här reflektionen växer fram i en säsong fylld av både mörker och ljus — Nobelveckan i Stockholm, min egen utställning Gnistor av Hopp, och en djupare utforskning av hur hopp rör sig genom oss som människor, ledare och skapare.

Hoppets filosofiska rötter — en kraft som vägrar försvinna

I tider när mörkret fördjupas växer också människans längtan efter ljus. Det är en uråldrig rörelse inom oss — lika biologisk som existentiell — denna impuls att söka riktning när världen känns tung.

Filosofen Gabriel Marcel kallade hoppet en trohet till livet, en form av närvaro som vägrar ge efter för förtvivlan. För honom var hoppet inte en flyktig önskan, utan en stillsam och orubblig kraft som binder oss till världen, till varandra och till våra framtida jag. Att hoppas, i Marcels mening, är inte att blunda för mörkret, utan att se det — och ändå välja att tro att något mer är möjligt.

Daniel Dennett och andra evolutionsfilosofer beskriver hopp på ett annat sätt: som en biologisk strategi, formad genom årtusenden. Utan förmågan att föreställa oss en framtid annorlunda än vår nutid hade vi förlorat viljan att agera. Hoppet har drivit oss att anpassa oss, resa oss, skapa, samarbeta och blicka framåt.

Och långt före dem beskrev Aristoteles hoppet som en vaken dröm — en aktiv riktning mot det som kan bli, grundad i erfarenhet, omdöme och mänsklig strävan efter att förverkliga sin potential.

Hopp är drömmen som håller ögonen öppna — inte flyr verkligheten, utan formar den.

Hopp levt i världen — Nobelpristagare som tänder ljus i mörkret

Om filosoferna visar hoppets inre rörelse, visar Nobelpristagare hur hoppet ser ut när det levs offentligt. Deras handlingar gör hoppet synligt — som mod, riktning och integritet.

År 2025 fick María Corina Machado Nobels fredspris för sin kamp för demokrati i Venezuela — ”en demokratis ljuslåga i ett tilltagande mörker”. Hon visar hur hopp ibland kräver motstånd och moraliskt mod.

År 2021 belönades Maria Ressa och Dmitrij Muratov för sitt försvar av pressfriheten i en tid präglad av desinformation och hot. Hoppet tar hos dem formen av sanning — en tro på att öppenhet fortfarande kan skydda det som är skört.

År 2018 mottog Olga Tokarczuk Nobelpriset i litteratur. Hennes sammanvävda berättelser bär ett hopp grundat i förundran — en förmåga att se mening där andra ser oreda.

År 2014 fick Malala Yousafzai fredspriset för sitt mod att stå upp för flickors rätt till utbildning. Hon visar att hopp ibland bärs av de yngsta — de som tror på framtider som ännu inte finns, men som förtjänar att försvaras.

Tillsammans bildar dessa röster en mosaik av hoppets uttryck:
hopp som mod,
hopp som sanning,
hopp som berättelse,
hopp som rättighet,
hopp som en låga som vägrar slockna.

De påminner oss om att hopp inte flyr verkligheten — det omformar den.

Hopp som mänsklig förmåga — hur sinnet hittar morgondagen

Hopp bärs inte bara av världens ledare. Det är en förmåga som lever tyst i oss alla.

Forskningen — från Emmy Werners studier på Kauai till modern neurovetenskap — visar att hopp inte bara är en känsla, utan en orientering mot möjlighet. Werner fann att de som klarar sig trots svårigheter inte gör det tack vare frånvaron av problem, utan tack vare närvaron av något litet men avgörande: en relation, en tro, en glimt av att livet kan öppnas igen.

Neurovetenskapen bekräftar detta. Hopp tänder nätverk i hjärnan som styr planering, kreativitet och motivation. Det är en biologisk och existentiell rörelse — förmågan att föreställa sig ett ”annorlunda sedan” och börja orientera sig mot det.

Som om hjärnan tände en lykta i mörkret och viskade:
Följ mig. Det finns en väg.

Ledarskapsforskningen pekar i samma riktning.
INSEAD visar att de mest framtidsredo ledarna:

• vilar i mening,
• praktiserar mental flexibilitet,
• omfamnar paradoxer (rädsla och hopp, förlust och möjlighet),
• bygger relationer som buffert mot osäkerhet,
• söker förnyelse snarare än ren uthållighet.

Och INSEADs Talent Competitiveness Report 2025 visar att resiliens idag kräver mer än anpassning — det kräver fantasi. De som lyckas investerar i nyfikenhet, kreativitet och mänsklig utveckling.

Här blir Joanna Macy central. Hon beskriver Active Hope som en praktik — inte något vi har, utan något vi gör.
En medveten handling: att förbereda marken för framtider som ännu inte finns, men som redan anas.

Hopp blir en hållning.
Ett val.
En riktning mot möjlighet.
Ibland så liten att den knappt syns — men stark nog att förändra vägen.

Gnistor av Hopp — konsten där det minsta ljuset räcker

Alla dessa trådar — filosofi, mod, motståndskraft, ledarskap — möts i mitt konstnärliga projekt Gnistor av Hopp.

I vintermörkrets stillhet kan den minsta gnista bära ett löfte.

Gnistor av Hopp vecklar ut sig som en stilla resa där akvarellens organiska ljus möter digitala lager och augmented reality — en sorts vaken dröm i Aristoteles mening, en bild av det som kan bli, inte bara det som är.

Här är hoppet nära:
i gester,
i möten,
i ljus som rör sig längre än man först tror.

Verken är tryckta på återvunnen aluminium — ett oväntat hållbart material som fångar ljuset på unika sätt. Några målningar bär AR-förlängningar — tysta portar som öppnar både inåt och utåt.

Konst som bjuder in snarare än imponerar.
Konst som frågar:
Vilken gnista av hopp bär du just nu?

Varje stor idé började som en gnista.
Varje genombrott, dikt, upptäckt och fredsarbete började med en människa som trodde att mer var möjligt.

Ljuset rör sig.
Det sprider sig.
Det bärs.
Det är aldrig ensamt.

Avslutning — när ljuset väljer att stanna

Hopp rör sig genom filosofin, genom konsten, genom ledarskapet, genom städer upplysta av Nobelvisioner.
Men mest av allt rör det sig genom oss —
i gesterna vi ger,
i tankarna vi när,
i möjligheterna vi vågar föreställa oss.

Sparks of Hope – When the Light Chooses to Stay

It often begins with something almost invisible.
A movement at the edge of your vision.
A warmth that lingers even as winter breathes cold.
A spark.

This reflection emerges during a season filled with both darkness and illumination — Nobel Week in Stockholm, my exhibition Sparks of Hope, and a deeper inquiry into how hope moves through us as humans, leaders, and creators.

Philosophical Roots of Hope — A Force That Refuses to Disappear

In every age where darkness deepens, humanity’s longing for light grows with it. It is an ancient motion within us — as biological as it is existential — this impulse to seek direction when the world feels heavy.

The philosopher Gabriel Marcel called hope a fidelity to life, a deep form of presence that refuses to surrender to despair. For him, hope was not a fleeting wish but a quiet and steadfast force binding us to the world, to one another, and to our future selves. To hope, in Marcel’s sense, is not to turn away from the dark, but to look at it fully and still believe something more is possible.

Daniel Dennett and other evolutionary thinkers offer another view: hope as a biological strategy shaped over millennia. Without the ability to imagine a future different from the present, humans would have lost the will to act. Hope has helped us adapt, rebuild, innovate, collaborate, and rise again. It is an inner mechanism that urges us to build shelter, seek connection, and lift our eyes beyond the horizon.

Long before Marcel or Dennett, Aristotle described hope as a waking dream — an active orientation toward what could be, grounded in experience, judgment, and humanity’s striving toward fulfilment.

Hope, then, is the dream that keeps its eyes open — not fleeing reality, but shaping it.

Living Hope — Nobel Laureates Who Illuminate the Darkness

If philosophers illuminate the inner motion of hope, Nobel laureates show us what hope looks like when lived in public life. Their actions reveal hope not as sentiment, but as courage in motion.

In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado for her struggle for democracy in Venezuela — “a flame of democracy in a deepening darkness.” Her life shows how hope sometimes requires resistance and ethical courage.

In 2021, Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov were honoured for defending press freedom against disinformation and authoritarian pressure. They remind us that hope can take the form of truth — the conviction that transparency still protects what is fragile.

In 2018, Olga Tokarczuk received the Literature Prize. Through her interconnected narratives, she shows hope rooted in wonder — the ability to see meaning and relation where others see chaos.

In 2014, Malala Yousafzai transformed personal vulnerability into global advocacy for girls’ education. She shows that hope is sometimes carried by the youngest among us, who believe in futures not yet born but worth fighting for.

Together, these laureates form a mosaic of hope’s expressions:
hope as courage,
hope as truth,
hope as story,

hope as a flame that refuses to go out.

They show that hope does not escape reality — it reshapes it.

Hope as a Human Capacity — How the Mind Finds Tomorrow

And yet hope is not only carried by global leaders. It is a capacity that lives quietly in all of us.

Decades of resilience research — from Emmy Werner’s landmark Kauai study to contemporary neuroscience — show that hope is not merely an emotion but an orientation toward possibility. Werner found that those who thrive despite adversity do so because something small but crucial is present: one caring relationship, one belief, one sense that life could open again.

Neuroscience confirms this. Hope lights up regions of the brain linked to planning, creativity, and motivation. It is a biological and existential movement — the capacity to envision an “alternative later” and begin organizing ourselves toward it.

As if the brain lights a lantern in the dark and whispers:
Follow me. There is a way.

Leadership research echoes this.
INSEAD finds that the most future-fit leaders:

• stay anchored in meaning,
• practice cognitive flexibility,
• embrace paradox (fear and hope, loss and possibility),
• invest in trusted relationships,
• prioritize renewal over pure endurance.

And the INSEAD 2025 Talent Competitiveness Report shows that resilience today demands more than adaptation — it requires imagination. The individuals, companies, and nations that thrive invest in curiosity, creativity, and human development.

Here, Joanna Macy offers a final insight: Active Hope is not something we have — it is something we practice.
A conscious preparation for futures that are not yet here, but whose outlines we can already sense.

Hope becomes a stance.
A choice.
A quiet orientation toward possibility.
Sometimes so small it is almost invisible — yet powerful enough to change direction.

Echoes of Presence – Shadow, Light, and the Shape of Silence

There are moments when light doesn’t just shine – it whispers. It glides across a surface, pauses at an edge, shapes a quiet contour. In that moment something fleeting yet tangible appears – a presence that cannot be captured, only sensed.

Perhaps it is there that inspiration takes form – in what has not yet found words, but is already felt.

The Silhouette – the Shape of Memory

A silhouette is more than a form against the light. It is an imprint of time, an echo of something that once stood there. When the details fade and the colors fall silent, presence itself steps forward. The silhouette becomes like a memory – not exact, but true in its own way.

In the shifting patterns of nature, the same language repeats: trees in backlight, a figure passing by, a shadow that follows without speaking. The silhouette is both anonymous and intimate – a reminder that we all leave traces, even when we believe ourselves unseen.

Shadows and silhouettes can become storytellers in themselves.
They remind us that absence can define presence, that a gesture of light and darkness can carry rhythm, memory, and meaning — much like jazz itself, playing between the notes.

Echo – What Lingers

An echo is not a repetition; it is a delay. It carries the distance of time but also the warmth of its source. When an image or sound bounces back, it changes – yet its essence remains.

So too with our impressions. We experience something, and much later it returns – in a color, in a light, in a feeling we cannot quite place. Art can be that echo: a movement between the now and what has lingered.

Within the tempestuous Carina Nebula, photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope, lies “Mystic Mountain” – a living sculpture of gas and dust, sculpted by light and time. Perhaps the nature of inspiration is like that: light traveling through darkness and still arriving.

NASA’s Art Program has invited artists to capture the moment when the human gaze meets the infinite — a gesture of curiosity and connection that mirrors the creative act itself. One of its latest commissions, To the Moon and Back, by artists Geraluz and WERC, transforms geometric patterns into reflections on exploration and belonging.

Light from space is not cold; it carries our questions, just as a painting can hold our longing for meaning.

Presence – The Space Between

Presence is not about filling every surface, but about daring to leave emptiness.
It is in the pause, in the breath between two movements, that true presence emerges. A painting can breathe, a photograph can hold silence, a room can contain stillness.

We often speak of seeing, but perhaps it is more about staying – letting the gaze rest until something begins to speak back.
That is the moment when the viewer becomes part of the image.

Silence is not emptiness but a vivid presence — an art of surrender, allowing the world, and ourselves, to unfold in stillness.
Presence, then, is not static. It is a dialogue between weight and lightness, order and chance.

The eye seeks symmetry, yet the heart longs for irregularity.
When the well-balanced tilts slightly, when silence gains a hint of motion – energy arises.

That same energy can be sensed in this year’s Nobel Prizes, where science turned toward poetry.
* Quantum tunneling – particles passing through barriers as if they weren’t there.
* Molecular frameworks with vast inner surfaces – where the hidden holds more than the visible.
* Words that refuse to give up before the dark.
All tell the same story: that the invisible, the nearly impossible, still carries the potential for change.

In the act of creation, that movement is familiar – a kind of inner tunneling, where thought slips through barriers, from silence into form.

There is a physics to every feeling, a structure to every thought.
And perhaps art is the place where the precision of science meets the poetry of stillness.

Light as a Storyteller

Light is more than illumination – it is the voice of the story. It shapes, conceals, reveals. It lets shadow speak.

Sometimes it carries stillness, sometimes drama, sometimes only a faint promise.
Light shows us what is visible, but also reminds us of what is not.
In its passage through the day there is rhythm, change, and hope.
And in its absence – space for dreaming.

When shadow falls and light withdraws, something remains in the room.
Not just the image, but a feeling – a soft echo of presence.
Perhaps that is where the essence of art lies: in the dialogue between the visible and the perceptible.

Ekon av närvaro – Skugga, ljus och tystnadens form

Det finns ögonblick när ljuset inte bara lyser – det viskar.
Det glider över en yta, stannar till vid en kant, formar en stilla kontur.
I det ögonblicket uppstår något flyktigt men ändå påtagligt – en närvaro som inte kan fångas, bara anas.

Kanske är det där inspirationen tar form – i det som ännu inte funnit ord, men redan känns.

Silhuetten – Minnets form

En silhuett är mer än en form mot ljuset.
Den är ett avtryck av tid, ett eko av något som en gång stod där.
När detaljerna bleknar och färgerna tystnar, träder själva närvaron fram.
Silhuetten blir som ett minne – inte exakt, men sant på sitt eget sätt.

I naturens skiftande mönster upprepar sig samma språk:
träd i motljus, en gestalt som passerar, en skugga som följer utan att tala.
Silhuetten är både anonym och intim – en påminnelse om att vi alla lämnar spår,
även när vi tror oss vara osedda.

Skuggor och silhuetter kan bli berättare i sig själva.
De påminner oss om att frånvaro kan definiera närvaro –
att ett samspel mellan ljus och mörker kan bära rytm, minne och mening —
precis som jazzen, som spelas mellan tonerna.

Eko – Det som dröjer kvar

Ett eko är inte en upprepning; det är en fördröjning.
Det bär tidens avstånd men också källans värme.
När en bild eller ett ljud studsar tillbaka förändras det – men dess väsen finns kvar.

Så är det också med våra intryck.
Vi upplever något, och långt senare återvänder det –
i en färg, i ett ljus, i en känsla vi inte riktigt kan placera.
Konst kan vara det ekot – en rörelse mellan nuet och det som dröjt sig kvar.

Kanske är inspirationens natur just så: ljus som färdas genom mörkret och ändå når fram.

NASAs konstprogram har bjudit in konstnärer att fånga ögonblicket när den mänskliga blicken möter det oändliga —
en gest av nyfikenhet och förbindelse som speglar själva skapandeakten.
Ett av de senaste uppdragen, To the Moon and Back av konstnärerna Geraluz och WERC, förvandlar geometriska mönster till reflektioner om utforskande och tillhörighet.

Ljuset från rymden är inte kallt;
det bär våra frågor – precis som en målning kan rymma vår längtan efter mening.

Närvaro – Rummet mellan

Närvaro handlar inte om att fylla varje yta, utan om modet att lämna tomrum.
Det är i pausen, i andetaget mellan två rörelser, som sann närvaro uppstår.
En målning kan andas, ett fotografi kan hålla tystnad, ett rum kan rymma stillhet.

Vi talar ofta om att se, men kanske handlar det mer om att stanna –
att låta blicken vila tills något börjar tala tillbaka.
Det är då betraktaren blir en del av bilden.

Tystnad är inte tomhet, utan en levande närvaro –
en konst i att ge efter, låta världen – och oss själva – veckla ut sig i stillhet.

Närvaro är alltså inte statisk.
Det är en dialog mellan tyngd och lätthet, ordning och slump.
Ögat söker symmetri, men hjärtat längtar efter oregelbundenhet.
När det välbalanserade tippar lätt, när tystnaden får en antydan av rörelse –
då uppstår energi.

Nobelprisets poesi

Samma energi kan anas i årets Nobelpris, där vetenskapen vände sig mot poesin:

Kvanttunnelering – partiklar som passerar genom barriärer som om de inte fanns.
Molekylära ramverk med enorma inre ytor – där det dolda rymmer mer än det synliga.
Ord som vägrar ge upp inför mörkret.

Alla berättar samma historia: att det osynliga, det nästan omöjliga, fortfarande bär förändringens kraft.

I själva skapandet är den rörelsen välbekant –
en sorts inre tunnelering, där tanken glider genom barriärer,
från tystnad till form.

Det finns en fysik i varje känsla, en struktur i varje tanke.
Och kanske är konsten den plats där vetenskapens precision möter tystnadens poesi.

Ljuset som berättare

Det låter skuggan tala.

Ljuset visar oss det synliga, men påminner också om det osynliga.
I dess gång genom dagen finns rytm, förändring och hopp.
Och i dess frånvaro – utrymme för drömmar.

The Power of Attention

After exploring shapes, angles, and the hidden patterns that hold the world together, I now move closer — into the intimacy of details.

To move close is to listen. The nearer we come, the more infinite things appear. Pigment becomes terrain, a shadow turns into structure, a reflection reveals rhythm.

Both in art and leadership, this is a dance of distance — zooming in to sense what is truly present, zooming out to see where it belongs.
Each shift of focus changes what we perceive, yet both are needed to understand the whole.

Balance begins when attention becomes movement.

The Language of Balance and Symmetry

Balance is not stillness — it is a quiet motion, barely seen.
Symmetry, its companion, reflects the way one side listens to another.

In nature, these principles appear everywhere: butterfly wings that mirror without perfection, petals that align along invisible axes, water that reflects the world yet wavers with the wind.
Life, like art, thrives on imperfect symmetry.

To sense balance is to recognize that harmony often hides in difference — that a system, a painting, or a team breathes through the tension between its parts.

True balance is relationship — the dialogue that keeps things alive.

Zooming In — The World Within the World

When I create, paint or photograph closely, the world expands.
A grain of pigment disperses like a galaxy. A fibre of paper carries the memory of a tree.
Form dissolves into essence, and new symmetries reveal themselves: the curve of colour echoing an unseen arc, the texture of metal meeting the softness of light.

In leadership, the same applies. As the Thinkers50 “Zoom In, Zoom Out” essay describes, great leaders navigate both the micro and the macro — seeing not just the task, but the person; not only the report, but the rhythm beneath it.
Zooming in is not control — it is care, a kind of presence.

To zoom in is to meet reality from within.

Zooming Out — Seeing the Larger Pattern

Then comes the moment to step back.
What once felt infinite becomes a fragment of a larger composition — a note within a wider harmony.

In art, this means feeling the whole through proportion and flow.
In strategy, it means sensing how each detail connects to culture, context, and time.
And in our digital world, trust requires this same rhythm — the ability to move between the human and the systemic.

The World Economic Forum’s “Seven Ps of Digital Trust” captures this balance beautifully:

Zoom in to the human side — Personalization, Perception, Protection.
Zoom out to the ecosystem — Proficiency, Provenance, Payment, Prevalence.

Together, they describe a symmetry between individual experience and collective responsibility — between intimacy and infrastructure.
Just as art needs both pigment and perspective, trust in an AI age depends on both detail and design.

Trust, like balance, is built in motion — between nearness and vision.

The Rhythm of Seeing and Sensing

Ellen MacArthur once shared how, at sea, she learned to “zoom in” on each wave while “zooming out” to navigate her route across the world.
That rhythm — attention shifting between the immediate and the infinite — is what connects art, leadership, and trust.

In creating or painting, I work one step at a time, yet the horizon remains in mind.
In boardrooms, leaders weigh single decisions while holding entire futures.
And in our digital landscapes, every algorithmic choice ripples into culture and confidence.

The work — whether artistic or strategic — is not about control but about connection.

The balance of detail and distance is the essence of foresight.

Compositional Balance — Practicing the Art of Equilibrium

Every artwork is a rehearsal for harmony.
The brush finds its rhythm, the colour its counterweight, and the hand learns to listen more than it moves.

When I compose, I often start with symmetry — a repeated line, a mirrored hue — and then disrupt it, letting imbalance bring life.
That same principle shapes effective leadership and digital design: stability requires movement, and trust requires flexibility.

Where Details Whisper Their Stories

There’s a moment, just before the camera finds its focus, when the world seems to hold its breath. A fragment of metal, a carved shape, a brush of light — something small suddenly becomes everything.

In that instant, we move from glancing to seeing. From scanning to sensing. From overview to intimacy. This theme — Close-Up & Details — invites that quiet shift: the art of leaning in to what we usually overlook.

In the Margin

When we come close, the world rearranges itself. The familiar becomes abstract. The ordinary, sculptural. Edges blur, textures rise to the surface, and small things — once peripheral — reveal unexpected grace.

“In the margin” is not just a place on a page or a frame. It is a state of awareness — a borderland where focus softens and something new comes alive. It is there, in the faint glimmer of a reflection or the crack in the paint, that the unnoticed begins to speak.

Close-ups remind us that life’s beauty often hides in what doesn’t announce itself.

Details as Meaning

Every detail carries its own story — a curve, a repetition, a texture that time has shaped.
Artists, poets, and scientists share this same discipline: to notice what others pass by.

The visual artist Yasemin Uyar’s Patternicity transforms ordinary moments into “dreamy diagrams of daily life” — reminding us that even the smallest fragments hold hidden rhythm, if we only pause to see.

To attend to details, then, is not to be distracted by the small, but to let the small reveal the whole. Attention, after all, is a form of reverence. In a world of noise, to truly see is an act of care.

The Practice of Seeing

Taking a close-up photograph is a kind of meditation. It demands stillness. It rewards patience.

The act of adjusting focus — of moving closer until the familiar becomes strange — opens a new dimension of understanding. Light becomes language. Shadow, punctuation.

Try it: move close to something you think you know — a door, a leaf, a fragment of wall — and stay with it. What appears at first as form begins to dissolve into texture, rhythm, and tone. The surface becomes story.

Zooming In and Out — From Art to Strategy

This act of seeing — zooming in to explore detail, zooming out to understand context — is not only artistic. It mirrors the very rhythm of leadership and strategy.

In boardrooms, as in creative work, clarity emerges from movement between scales. We zoom in to understand nuance and data; we zoom out to discern direction and purpose.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, awarded to Philippe Aghion, Peter Howitt, and Joel Mokyr, celebrates this same dynamic in the realm of innovation — the dance of creative destruction. Their research shows how renewal happens when we can see both the fine grain of change and the broader architecture of systems: when we value the small sparks that, over time, transform entire economies.

This interplay between micro and macro echoes Alexander von Humboldt’s vision of nature as a living web — where “no single fact can be considered in isolation, but only as part of a cosmic whole.”

In both art and strategy, that awareness is vital. Zoom in, and you find structure and details. Zoom out, and you find context and meaning. Both are needed for renewal.

3. Stone and Color

Against a wall of vivid red, a carved ornament spirals like a fossil of movement, holding centuries in a single touch.

Each image is a microcosm — a meeting of material, time, and emotion. Together they speak of attention, of presence, of belonging through closeness.
